Maybe a bit of both, but not as much of either as some might think.
A lot of what i learned about vikings in my youth has since been debunked. It’s still a largely misunderstood culture and it’s been very difficult to find reliable information from the remains of their usually very temporary settlements. Because i have Scandinavian blood, i wish to identify with these maniacal badasses to some extent. My berserkerish temper doesn’t seem so anomalous when i read tales of their savagery. And i’ve never really settled down. Might come by it honestly!
Ahhh, the Vikings one of the powerful tribes that settled in the UK even before the Norman Conquest, albeit mostly in the North. They also made the way into the Middle East and North America. They are originally from Scandinavia aren't they.
They were savage but that was the same with all types of people and empires back then, like the Romans, Normans etc. Everything was about conquering lands and claiming territories.
You can't successfully take over other countries If you're not sophisticated. Savages don't get very far on the world stage.

Expert seaman, savage invaders, master traders - including slaves, but here's the weird thing, when they settled down, whether in Ireland, France, or Russia, they went native. They picked up the local language and customs.
Yes, they did mix in some of their words and customs, but they preferred to blend in, more than force the people they settled among to adopt their ways... unlike the British of later centuries.
They had one of the more complex societies at the time.
