In games, Do you prefer playing the male or female protagonist?

Female, mostly.
Some exceptions to that are argonians in elder scrolls because they somehow have breasts... they are lizard people, not mammals and other comparable races in other games.
Sometimes when games have these oversexualised character models I go for the male character. If I have to look at a characer whose wholle design focus is on being hot I prefer to look at a guy not a women.

I prefer to play the male cause they usually have more basic personalities. Females are usually a complex aesthetic improvement on the male character and I don’t like complicated game plots.

If you mean purely non verbal fighting, I think females are better. For Pokémon, I prefer male characters.

I prefer playing as a male if given the choice, but if not, then I do not have a preference. When I was age 12 - 15, I preferred playing as a female in games like Skyrim, but now it feels weird to do that.

For a game like Horizon Zero Dawn, being a female character felt cool, since it was something different. Also, I just enjoyed the game a lot.

I usually play female, wizard or some kind magic user and the wizard robes look bad on male bodies in most games.

I usually only play male characters unless the story arc or character’s abilities are different. One of my all time favorite games, “Onimusha”, had a sequel in which there were 4 playable characters. No matter which primary character you chose from the start, each storyline forced you to play all of the other characters briefly. There was one female and she was pretty different from the males. Playing as her was actually pretty sweet. Something tells me that a lot of female gamers might disagree though. Ell oh ell!
Some of my favorite fighting game characters are female. Marvel Contest of Champions has a few absolute god-mode female characters.

As a man I always pick the male protagonist, there's no reason to play as a female protagonist because the male protagonists are always better.
