What do you define as art?

What brought this question to mind is that most people seem to say AI art isn’t art at all with no strong explanation for why. I personally see it as a tool, and how much of it is art is how much you put your heart and mind into it. There’s a lot more creative and technical decisions necessary for a good image than most people seem to realize. It will look like trash if you’re not specific enough when trying to tell the program what you want to see. Also people forget how many kinds of things can be considered art. Almost anything can from the right perspective. One good example is martial arts.

I’ll explain why. In terms of simply looking at the product made, AI art is  terrible  art. There’s issue with hands, with symmetry of eyes, and with pictures like the one you posted there’s a great deal of back ground issues alongside the integrity of the focal point that’s supposed to be that window. You can immediately see how the circle is imperfect and that draws your eye rather than to the rest of the drawing. Now, will AI get better with time? Sure, as it learns and figures our better references. The biggest issue with that is the ethics of it. Tracing is already a huge issue in the digital art community, or just taking someone else’s image and putting it in a program to add what you want to it and this is among living people. It’s seen as cheap to just trace over someone’s work and call it your own, especially if they’re a smaller artist who doesn’t have their own foot in the door in a way that helps them in the ways they want. AI art engines are not only primarily doing this as a way to teach their engines to work, but they’re doing it  exclusively  for profit. The people using these machines that are completely unregulated and some are currently in the process of being sued for copyright issues following how many artists’ work has been plugged into their database without their consent do this because they feel that artists play an unnecessary role in society, ultimately. I’m not entirely opposed to the progression of AI as a concept, I wouldn’t mind being able to live in a place where robots did more work than we did, provided that I would be able to live a normal, comfortable life as a result of that. This is not the case with AI art engines, whose creators use it exclusively just to give the power of years and years of art making skills to people  to sell  and then those people sell that art not realizing or not caring that someone else’s work is essentially what created that image. All AI artwork can essentially be whittled down into collages of other people’s work as references that are then traced over into a new, shoddy image. The AI art is just technically unskilled and objectively bad, and the people who made that machine are just doing it because they ultimately see art as a worthless endeavor and want to replace artists with machines. It’s really not any different from the blatant plagiarism that happens when students get ChatGPT to write an essay for them, which it not only doesn’t follow citation rules but it also pretty blatantly gets information wrong. Even with editing, unless that person knows exactly what it’s supposed to say (which they often don’t because they think the essay is a worthless assignment to begin with otherwise they wouldn’t have done this) the essay can not only earn them a failing grade but can also get them expelled, or get someone’s degree revoked. This follows with AI art too. The AI engines should not be viewed as a piece of art, maybe a tool at most like a paintbrush. Editing AI is slightly more tolerable than just taking it as-is, finding ways to fix all the obvious technical problems, but there’s still the ethics of the engine itself and that’s a big part of why a lot of people don’t see AI art as art worth having.

It’s visually appealing and resembles other art forms but it’s not art.

Art is almost always created with/ by human hands.

Sculpted, painted, chiseled.

Finger painting- that’s art as well.

Ai art can somewhat construct concepts we imagine, but that would moreso make it an imagination redesigner or so.

It’s not human hand, it’s not human effort, and it’s not what a human envisioned when they imagined what they had or felt what they did.

Ai is a lazy art tool. It can look “great.” But it may not be what the artist imagined. Perhaps “better,” or “not close at all.”

It’s appealing; it consists of colored hues; it can have definition/ theme/ meaning or message to it/behind it and even have art concepts like abstract/ stippling/ pointillism and etc.

But it’s a counterfeit. It’s not GEN-U-INE art. Art is human flaw. Human design. Human effort. Human passion. Human emotion.

Art. Is. Humanity.

Q: What do you define as art?
A: The product of creative effort.

Q: Is this art?
A: No, but also yes. No because AIs can't think, and thus cannot be creative, but yes because the AI stole art that creative minds made, so its still comprised of that art.

It is not a tool, its a weapon.
A drawing tablet is a tool. art supplies are a tool, even drawing apps are a tool, but this is not.

With an art tool, you are the artist, but when you give command prompts to an AI to tell it to draw or paint, and then you make the claim that its "your art", thats as absurd as you telling me to draw you something, then you claiming that because you described it well enough for me to draw it as requested, that you made it.

The reality in that scenario is that I made it, and all you did was make a request, so its my art, not yours.

The problem with AI "art" is that its stealing artwork posted by artists, and then using said art in an algorithm in order to replicate the entire piece or part of it. And its doing this perpetually and en mass.

This causes the following problems:
1. Intellectual property theft.
2. Job elimination/theft, as you do not need to pay an AI and they can produce works much faster.
3. The progressive elimination of human artists existing, as more and more choose to have AI draw for them instead of learning how to draw, just because its faster and easier.

We should be deleting these types of AIs and anything they produce off the internet, and sueing anyone that uses or creates these programs for IP theft.

They are a catastrophe for real artists and human creativity in general.

If you want to make art, pick up a pencil, pen, markers, crayons, paint, or drawing stylus, and just practice, and if you can't be bothered to do that, then pay an artist who can.

Art evokes emotion from the human spirit. It is truly a human experience and while AI is a useful tool, it doesn’t quite capture the human feeling in the same way as a sculpture crafted by hand; or music composed from the depths of despair. We appreciate art because we feel the experience of the artist

Im an engineer by profession but I love art and especially music. A lot of science majors and engineers I know think art is wasteful or unimportant. They tell me “science is what makes a nation powerful” I reply “But art moves the hearts of a nations people”.

art showed skill therefore most modern art is not real art.

similarly the bot doesn't hav any skill nor practice but still if the product is the same as skill it is art because it is the same.

if i photograph a rembrandt that is neither skill nor mine but ai draws a new combination it is ITS art.

The art made by AI isn't really art I guess there is really no emotions and the AI may just not understand what its doing but making an AI is a form of art because it is designed by humans. Humans prompting an AI to create something is still art because a human prompted it but if it's an AI auto generating anything without anyone controlling it, its not art. But anyone may see it as an inspiration. People can take inspiration on something that isn't art.
