Are you aware of the origins of the Cinderella story?

My wife just watched a Norwegian movie called Three Wishes for Cinderella. She told me part of the plot. There were differences from other versions.

Then she was reminiscing about the 1965 Disney musical with Lesley Ann Warren and started singing the song In My Own Little Corner. I can just see her as a little girl relating to that.

So then we googled the song. Leslie Ann Warren singing in a little girl voice.

Then I wondered about the origins of the story that has been told so many times in books, plays, operas and movies. Was it eastern European? Brothers Grimm?
I was surprised to learn that precursors go back to the first century BCE.

Been around for a while as Cinderfella with Jerry Lewis, which came out in 1960. Disneyland wasn't built until 1957.

Cinderella is a 1950 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by RKO Radio Pictures. Based on Charles Perrault's 1697 fairy tale, it features supervision by Ben Sharpsteen. The film was directed by Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi. Walt Disney was notorious for stealing cultural tales and even lifting whole books that were written long ago. Pinocchio and others were books written by others that Disney just stole and used his wealth to hire attorneys to squash any lawsuits that may have happened.

Same. Ill give you this one: The flood in the Bible actually happened. 11,000 years ago the Black sea was dry and an earthquake caused the Mediterranean to come POURING In. There are settlements at the bottom and the indigenous people there, Indo-Europeans fled in all directions taking their language and flood story with them which is why egypt, Mesopotamia and india all have a flood story in their local theologies. I really miss the classroom...😥

@DrPepper12 Yes! Why people insist on global flood is beyond me. And also the story of Moses comes from the legend of Sargon of the Akkadians and several other oral traditions.

I do have to ask; did you follow Christianity at one point in your life? Some of the things you share seem to be a lot more informed than a typical secular person. :D

@TheRealPepperPotts. Yeah, I come from a line of Irish Catholics and was raised Catholic. Went to Catholic grammar school from 1st through 8th grades. Was an altar boy. Some of the nuns and one young pries were really cool. I didn't have any bad experiences.

The all boys school in 9th grade was sadistic at times.

I entered my rebellions phase in public high school, but I was still interested in discovering answers to questions about God and religion. So, for years, I studied things like ancient history, the history of Christianity and Judaism, world religions, mythology, paleontology, archaeology, cultural anthropology, geology, etc,.

@Lliam How interesting! I'm glad to hear that you didn't have any issues as an alter boy, given the scandals surrounding that.

Those are all fascinating topics. Sometimes I feel like I'll never have enough time to read all the books I want read and learn all the things I want to know. This is a fun question, by the way. The origins of things can be fun to discover, at least sometimes.

Quite the ecclectic academic endeavors! Good for you! I too went to war with sadistic nuns and i dint regret a moment of it. Those penguins were outstandingly pedagogically incompetent.

I liked some of the nuns a lot. Because of them, I still have a soft spot in my heart for movies like The Bells of St. Mary's, Lilies of the Field, etc.

It was the Brothers who ran the high school I went to in 9th grade who had major issues.

@Lliam Sorry, it took me a bit to get back to you. Yes, I am a Christian for personal reasons. But Evangelicalism is a disgrace to the teachings of Jesus at this point. I won't defend it. It's incredible to me how anyone can attend seminary and know about the history of Christianity and then turn around and continue lying about how the Bible came to be and how it is to be interpreted. It made me very angry for a time and I couldn't stomach the dishonesty and how abusive practices were allowed to continue in leadership. So I can relate to a lot of the discussions and criticisms of it.

What's crazy to me is how people like me are labeled heretics (a Catholic term frequently tossed around in Evangelical circles, ironically) for actually taking our faith seriously and who have a commitment to pursuing truth. Evangelicalism would have everyone believe that I am a shallow, superficial Christian because I don't agree with certain interpretations. Well, I don't agree because they are straight-up incorrect or misleading (if you read it in context and with the Greek and Hebrew text right beside you). Add archaeology, historical and cultural context, and it makes the cognitive distortion even worse with how they want me to read it. OK, I'll stop. My keyboard is on fire...

@TheRealPepperPotts. That makes total sense. I don't claim to know everything. I'm cool with people's religious beliefs as long as they don't try to force them on anyone. I actually have spiritual beliefs of my own.

That's neat that you are also spiritual, and I don't think people should force their beliefs on anyone either. @TheRealPepperPotts i have a similiar peoblem with my adopted atheism. Many religious people have told me that I just need to open my heart to Jesus and really read the holy texts. When I counter that I am an atheist BECAUSE I've read the texts - many sources, many times - they still indist that i didn't do it with an open heart and teally UNDERSTAND what i was reading. The hubris is off the charts with some of these people!!

@DrPepper12 It is so crazy! Well, you are a threat to them, and it is only in their own self-interest they must deny any and all of what you have processed, experienced and learned. Many Christians read the Bible through a lens, if they read it at all, and forget that it is a religious text, not a historical one. What you bring to the table isn't just what you've learned, in their eyes. It threatens their eternal soul and they cannot allow you to be right, even if it's as plain as day that you are. One reason this happens is because of the black and white thinking that is rampant in not only Christianity, but society as a whole. We must realize that things like hate, and violence, and abuse, and hypocrisy and all of the things that are permitted and even seen as zealous or sacrificial in Christianity today are the very things that Jesus taught against. If our defense of faith is utilizing shame, fear, guilt, and threats to bring people into it, how can we possibly claim to be any different than any other religion?

yeah most disney movies have origins in folklore. and if you think the disney movies are not politically correct, you should watch the cruelties and atrocities in the originals xD
