Diana Ross grew up with Mary and Flo in Detroit's Brewster housing projects. Along with the original fourth Supreme, Barbara Martin, they were equals when they began the female singing group they called the Primettes. Then Berry Gordy discovered them and changed the name to the Supremes when he brought them to Motown.

Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, and Mary Wilson, who all knew each other from attending the same high school in Detroit, first started singing together in 1959 and eventually rose to fame as The Supremes, becoming one of the most successful girl groups of the 1960s.
It's sad to reflect on the fact that two of the original Supremes, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson, have passed away, leaving Diana Ross as the sole surviving member of the iconic vocal trio.

Ballard was just 32 years old when she died in 1976, never truly realizing her full potential or celebrating the group's success.

Wilson carried on the Supremes' legacy for decades after, but sadly passed in 2021 at the age of 76.
Diana’s tweet to Mary’s passing:

Diana Ross is still alive at 80 years old, it’s a bit sad knowing how life be when you get old with those who you grew up with, made history and success even though there were problems with the group but they made history together.
I’m talking the original supremes which it was these ladies and not other people who joined the group later.
