My friends and I have been playing dnd 5e for a long time but they are now suggesting playing pathfinder, anyone have any experience.

No, but I've done quite a bit of first edition, which is basically D&D 3.75. I'm told, and what little reading I've done on the subject suggests, that 2nd edition Pathfinder is closer to the 4th edition D&D than anything else.
