Why do you think people love dystopian stories?

I think it's because it's beautiful to see in a world that's even worse than ours that people can still come together and form connections and sacrifice for each other. I think it reminds us of our own struggles we have connecting with others and the pain we've felt. The contrast of the bleek world makes the few moments of joy stand out even more :).

And it also makes the characters more relateable and easier to root for because they have real problems in their life they're not just complaining about their coffee being too hot or something like that.

The intrigue, ambiance, mystery, and the sense of danger pulls readers & watchers in. That is at least my take, though it isn’t just the setting / tone / atmosphere, it is the characters and how they interact with the environment and interact with fellow people.

Ah, there is a think you didn't say, from an author's perspective and hopefully from a reader's perspective too:

Dystopia is a warning about the things to come, or the things that may come, precisely hoping that they won't happen when we, societally, talk about them enough !

I would argue that people are rather fascinated by dystopian stories, but love they do utopian stories.

I even think of Groundhog Day in some ways as a bliss as Phil enjoys his fun repeats initially
