I always liked Neil Gaiman’s story of how “Coraline” came to be marketed as a children’s novel despite being objectively horrifying even to adults. Apparently, his editor read through most of the book and blatantly told him it was too scary for kids. He suggested she take it home to her own children for them to read and if it scared them that badly then they would simply market it as horror rather than a children’s book. So that’s what she did, she read the story to her young kids and when she asked them if they were afraid, they said no. She went ahead with publishing it. It wasn’t until years later, when Neil Gaiman was speaking to those kids, genuinely impressed that they hadn’t been scared, that he asked them how they managed compared to the hundreds of fans who had told him how much it scared them as kids and adults. They confessed that they were actually terrified, but just had to know how it ended so they lied and said they weren’t afraid.
