2.7K opinions shared on Entertainment & Arts topic. Quite a few. The older I get, the more life I have lived and the more empathy I feel with the characters involved.
The one that sticks out in my mind right now is "Somewhere In Time", a 1980 Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour romance that has a cult following.
Reeve's character, a playwright named Richard Collier, lives in the present day (1980). He is very successful, but needs a break (I believe due to a failed relationship), so he travels to Mackinac Island, Michigan (a small island between the two peninsulas; it's where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet) and stays at the fabulous Grand Hotel. He learns the hotel has theater and visits a small hotel museum. There, he sees a picture of a beautiful young Jane Seymour whose character is Elise McKenna.
He becomes obsessed with the photo and learns that the picture was taken in 1912. He goes to the local library and does some research about Elisa McKenna. He learns from the librarian assisting him that last performance was at that hotel in 1912 and that, for the next 60 years, she lives in seclusion having died in 1972. The librarian also shows him the last picture of Elise McKenna as an old woman and mentions that she died.
Collier is shocked. The old woman in the picture is an old woman who visited him in 1972 at the after-party of the opening of Collier's first play. All these young people at the party and, as she quietly walks up to Collier from behind him, the guests fall silent. His 1972-self turns around and sees her not knowing who this woman is - famed reclusive actress Elise McKenna. She quietly says to him "Come back to me." and hands him a pocket watch. She then heads home. Her assistant asks how it went. She ignores the assistant, as if the assistant was invisible, walks into her bedroom, and closes the door.
Back in 1980, Collier learns "she died that night"; the date of her death was the date of that opening night of his first play.
Of course, not Collier is really obsessed. Why would she have sought him out that day in 1972? Why did she stop acting after her performance in 1912 at The Grand Hotel and become a recluse?
I will simply say this: He travels back in time and it's hard to explain other than it's psychological. It doesn't really make sense, but it is good enough for the movie and becomes critical near the end. He time travels to his very room in The Grand Hotel, but just before her last performance at The Grand Hotel...
I'll leave it at that but there's a reason why this is a cult film with a fanbase that formed a club that goes to The Grand Hotel to celebrate that movie.
I think in a way this movie has the best ending of a romantic movie. It is devastatingly sad - especially if you are a man who has experience real true love and subsequent "Great Heartbreak".
I watched this once with my uncle and father and both of them were choked up too.
If you've ever had that "Great Heartbreak" which, of course, leads to crying and depression and Lord knows I don't want to revisit that... well, as a man, Richard Collier's "Great Heartbreak" is the best on film... but that's not how the movie ends.

@DrPepper12 You know, I’ve heard of that one, but never saw it. A little before my time, and I believe it was a “Made For TV” movie, right? I’ll have to chase it down one day and check it out

Yes. Worth watching as a tearjerker
I'm emotional in general, but there have been a few movies that I can think of right now that have made me ball my eyes out: The Colour Purple, Step Mom, Beaches, Schindlers List, The Titanic, The Green Mile, The Note Book, Selena The Movie, and Mrs. Doubt Fire. I know there is more, but these are just a few.

One movie that has always tugged at my heartstrings is "The Pursuit of Happyness." Will Smith's powerful performance as Chris Gardner, a struggling father determined to provide a better life for his son, is incredibly emotional. The scenes of perseverance and the ultimate triumph, especially when his son looks at him with pride, often bring tears to my eyes. It's a beautiful portrayal of parental love and resilience. 🎬💕

Gosh I’m a sucker for sad and depressing movies, but if I had to name one, I’d say the 1988 animated film Grave of the Fireflies. It had me bawling my eyes out. The story follows a teenage boy and his little sister during World War II. They lose their parents in a firebombing, and the boy is left to fend for them both, trying to survive while remaining strong for his sister during such traumatic events. Highly recommended this!

1 yIm not one for sob stories and so think the true story of chis mcandless , ‘into the wild” will always feature in my list of inspirational movies and reaches me like many on a profoundly deep level. That together with “The Pursuit of Happyness” and “Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind “ I have watched many many times to provide me entertainment and comfort and or motivation and inspiration to rise up to life’s challenges.

One of my very favorite quotes from Into the wild / Christopher Mcandless..” Some people feel like they don't deserve love. They walk away quietly into empty spaces, trying to close the gaps of the past”
1 yI have a few movies that made me cry before, especially during the first time watching them. The Last Song because it’s about cancer and I know people who have passed away from it, Homeward Bound because I have a soft spot for missing pets and there’s another one about animals but I don’t remember the title.

1 yThere are so many movies that have made me cry, but I always end up bawling my eyes out at reunion scenes, especially if they take place after death (i. e. Robin Williams’ “What Dreams May Come” with him reuniting with the dog, the kids, etc.), or just ones involving wanting to see family (Adam Sandler’s “Click” did this really well too, surprisingly).
