It's actually called ''Loy Krathong'' here :)

And yes - it's my favourite local celebration.

Here in our village it was very serene, and lacking most of the usual commercialization.

Background: traditionally, it's rather about decorated floats launched onto the water around here. But the lanterns flying are indeed a sight to behold.

In 30 years, when you settle down, you and puppy should move to Chiang Mai. The "Land of Smiles" would suit you well. You won't believe what it's like to be around nice and kind people. I saw this festival, and I didn't understand it. But that doesn't matter. Just being there makes you a hero to the Thais. They love when Gringos respect their traditions.

But NEVER leave your apartment during the Sonkran Festival. You might like getting drenched with water, but not puppy. The festival is about celebrating the gift of water. It's off the hook crazy.
