Samuel Clemens was born in Elmira NY, not far from where I grew up. He chose his Mark Twain pseudonym from the way they measured the depth of the water on the river, using knotted rope.

He wrote several novels, and I read most of them when I was younger.

Though Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer are his best-known characters and works, my favorite is A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, maybe because it deals with time travel. I've been a Sci-Fi guy since.
