Who's ur favorite writer? why's that?

mine Frieda McFadden, She's the lord of criminal mystery genre! "Housemaid" series book is awesome and you get shocked and shocked until the end it makes u get involved in novel , and it's been proved in her mysterious books, that good guy is a villain at end, so it's not predictable at all! u get shocked of that guy u never expect! and u are like:" what the hell is going on here?"

Isaac Asimov then Kurt Vonnegut.

Asimov opened my eyes to so many things including fiction which I otherwise had no interest in. But, in 10th Grade (1978-79), I happened to stumble on a copy of The Foundation Trilogy and that changed my life regarding literary science fiction.

I feel guilty in a way; I found the book under the seat of a school desk when I was coming into English class IIRC. So, the book likely belonged to a student who sat at that desk earlier. I should have left the book there, but it was a thick paperback with an interesting cover and the first paragraph involving an entry from the Encyclopedia Galactica got me hooked. I already was a gifted science student who enjoyed science fiction and could quote Star Trek like "chapter and verse", so I was susceptible and gave in to my instinct to want to know more, so I took the book.

Several years later, In 1986ish, a friend of mine gave me a copy or told me to read Galápagos by Kurt Vonnegut.

I eventually did read it and enjoyed it's off-beat nature. Eventually, I read almost all of Vonnegut's novels (and Asimov's too) and discovered that I had a lot in common with him; we actually lived very close to each other although it was decades apart. We both worked for General Electric in Schenectady. His "Illium NY" is really Troy NY where I went to college and lived for 20 years. In short, we were both very very familiar with the Capital District of NY state which played prominently in his novels. (Cohoes NY, home of his ubiquitous character of Kilgore Trout, is across the Hudson River from Troy and I used to work there. I lost my virginity in Cohoes in 1984 to my second girlfriend.) Vonnegut and I had the same general ethics too, so I really identified with Vonnegut even though he was 40 years older than me. Finally, at the end of April 2002, I had a chance to meet him in an odd way but I blew it. It was just 79-year-old Vonnegut and I all alone at the baggage claim area in Laguardia Airport. He was on the same flight as my wife, but, as a VIP, he was let off first apparently. He looks at me as if wondering if I was his limo driver. I was like a deer in headlights, my mind recognizing it was Vonnegut but I just couldn't believe it and said nothing as my mind was trying to process the situation. Not being his limo driver, Vonnegut took off. Ironically, his limo driver did show up and I saw him holding a sign reading "Vonnegut" so that verified I was right; it was him! I asked the limo driver if he knew who Vonnegut was. He had no idea. I told him. Sadly, I did not see Vonnegut return as I must have missed him while I was looking for my wife and our dog who I was about to meet who was on that same flight.

there is no one favorite writer for me... but I read thousands of books, and I know that the same author can create something I love and something I will read and forget...

so there are books I love... not writers :D
