How many years old were you when you realized anime characters weren't based off humans?

I always assumed anime characters were Asians, maybe my brain is just racist but I legit did, did you know anime characters facial appearance and specific features were actually made based to resemble cats? They use cats faces to make humans that would make them look more cute or adorable, like that's the reason why their noses look like that and why their eyes are so big, let that sink in.

My impression has always been that manga culture was drawing bigger eyes as some sort of exotic breakthrough from slanted eyes... About cat or baby sized eyes, I guess I learned about it when the first selfie filters came out, snapchat I assume? Those enlarging eyes filters, I did my research back then, to understand the buzz about it

Before I got into anime I knew that anime characters used to be ugly in early days so artists referred this really handsome young swedish actor Björn Andrésen for reference.

But the fact that anime characters were also inspired by cats is new to me. I mean they all look orientals.

But then I have only watched death note, JJK and tokyo ghoul season 1. That does explain Naruto's whisker kinda thing lol.

I agree with you for the small nose and big eyes, for some unfortunate reasons, japanese pop culture often uses stronger or curved noses to portray villains. And the clichéd one to portray prettiness. But skin tones, small chest are very common in manga & anime genre.
