Both versions fit the song. Both fit it in different contects though. The original has a meaning with the actual quite voices and by being less energetic it fits One part of the message.
Disturbeds rock balad fits the song as well, their versions captures the "SOUND of silence", because the song is not about a quite place. Quite the opposite actually.

That's a good point. It's like looking at the same thing from two different perspectives. Each is valid, and each shows you something new that the other doesn't capture.

Disturbed did a few good covers with Land of confusion and The sound of silence, but i think for me it would be Hurt by Nine inch nails but covered by Johnny Cash. I like both versions but Johnny did it better in my belief.

Sound of silence. Both versions are great. Simon and Garfunkels original is already a great song. Disturbeds version is great in a completly different but still fitting direction.
