Did you know that Rod Serling created “The Twilight Zone” to air social issues that the networks refused to address under any other context?

Compelled by his thoughts and feelings about the lynching of Emmet Till in 1955, Serling wrote several “based upon true events” fictional treatments to stimulate conversation. However, network censors repeatedly twisted his narrative or shut him down altogether.

Then he conceived “The Twilight Zone” and the themes were just fringe enough that the social issues didn’t make network censors so nervous anymore.

I loved “The Twilight Zone”. It might very well have been my gateway drug into horror and science fiction. I think it was genius to devise an entire property for its potential to sneak meaningful conversations on important issues into the zeitgeist.

did you know he also wrote the original Planet of the Apes movie for the same reason? and if you look at The Twilight Zone episodes carefully you will see scenes that later appear in Planet of the Apes

Yes and he stole a lot of his ideas from some of the students ha had at Ithica College.
