Did/does disco actually exist?

Question

I was around in the days when the phenomenon known as disco was being purported to exist.
I never saw any actual evidence of disco other than the make-believe stuff from Hollywood.
Nor do any of my personal acquaintances have any first-hand knowledge of disco.

I view disco as I do alien-piloted UAPs.
Until I see it or them with my own eyes, nuh uh, I'm not buying it.

I was really turned on by psychedelia and rock in the late '60s when I was in my teens.
In high school and through the '70s, I was lead guitar and vocalist in garage bands playing rock music.

When Saturday Night Fever came out, I was appalled. I never saw the movie, but clips of John Travolta combing his greasy hair, strutting in that double knit suit and dancing made me want to vomit. I despised everything about disco, including the music.

I met my future wife in 1994 when I was 40. She is 2.5 years younger. I talked about my musical past and played her some of the music I like. She didn't like rock music or electric guitar. Come to find out, she had been a disco queen. She showed me photos of herself and her girlfriends all gussied up with big hair. She loved going dancing. I never really did. I was into going to rock concerts while she enjoyed clubs. I would have rather shot myself in the head instead of going inside a dance club.

Over the years, she has gained an appreciation for some of the music I like and I have even come to like some of the disco music from the '70s.

It's funny that disco and punk rock both spawned in the 70s. As one looks like the evil version of the other, when disco seemed to celebrate futility, punk rock raised its middle finger. Yet they might have been both nihilistic, in their own way lol

If you only went to high school a few years later and experienced the transition of so many girls and guys from the long-haired hippy "That 70's Show" / "Dazed and Confused" types to mini-John Travoltas in SNF, you'll understand how frighteningly real it was.

I was not into the Disco lifestyle which I felt at the time was rather vapid and, Lord knows, I wasn't going to dance. But, I have to admit, I didn't mind disco music that much as it grew out of funk and Motown etc.

Yep for 4 years in mid to late 1970's. I lived it. Loved it. It was great for a kid. ABBA , Saturday night Fever , yee haw. The Bee Gees. America was dancing again. However , the bad thing was the Birth of Aids came from Disco era. Disco music was the mix of Funk /Electronic music.
