Did you know today would have been Roy Orbison’s 90th birthday?

Roy Orbison was born April 23 1936, and if he was still alive, he would have turned 90 today.

Roy had the most amazing voice and I'm always surprised that so few people seem to appreciate him. Musicians universally respected and admired him and many of the best singers idolized him. Paul McCartney called him the greatest singer of all time, and he wasn't alone.

I'm usually not a "sappy love song" guy, especially in the old classic Country style, but Roy's voice overcame any objections, and his later, more rock-oriented songs just astounded me.

Cyndi Lauper has a song called "I drove all night" and she did a fantastic job with it, but Roy had actually recorded it first, but he died before it was released and Cyndi's version ended up being released first, but Roy's version is great - and his music video featured Jason Priestly and Jennifer Connelly.

I have his Black And White Night concert on my media server, filmed shortly before he died, and it was an amazing show.

He died at a very early age of 52, probably because of his hectic work schedule, touring, and producing records, and he even had a massive posthumous hit from his album Mystery Girl with "You Got It".

His first wife Claudette inspired his song "Oh, Pretty Woman".

He came to perform next door to where I used to work. I wanted to go see him but I got too busy. He died a few days afterwards, It was one of his last shows,

I didn't know that.
I didn't know much about his music and thought his persona with the black hair and sunglasses was dorky when I was young.

But I came to admire him greatly once I was older. He was a great song writer and his voice was incredible.

And he was a hell of a song writer too, not many artist can say they went to bed, woke up and 20 minuets later had a new song.
