I don't know about fired maybe suspended to send a message that the joke was in poor taste. Of course we should totally make fun of our elected leaders. But given Kimmel's history that joke probably did cross the line.

He made the joke days before the correspondent's dinner. Everyone knows it was a joke. No harm was done.

A lot of people don't understand that in the United States we have a constitution. The very first time we amended that constitution was to guarantee that anyone could say anything even if others may find it uncomfortable. People who love our country understand and cherish that freedom.

I tend to agree. But to use the Spiderman defense, "with great power comes great responsibility". Kimmel just happens to highly critical of Trump we could debate whether that is warranted or not. But that's why I stayed away from that and just called it, "in poor taste". Because like him or not, we as a country elected him. We can lampoon him as we do ANY politician. But as I say Kimmel has went record of being highly critical of Trump. He's not just some late night jester. So this joke is not going to be read the same way as say it were Jay Leno saying it. All comedians make jokes of what politicians do. Politicians tend to be hypocrites and calling them out makes for good humor. Trump happens to provide much, much more joke material. Biden wasn't immune. They all picked on him as well.

I don't buy the great power statement wrt Kimmel. He's an entertainer. His responsibility is to be funny.

Trump is arguably the leader of the free world. Nothing he says is a joke. When Trump makes an unhinged comment and J. D. Vance and Karolne Levette say he's joking, that's simply another lie.

Should he be fired? I’d say no. Late-night hosts have always pushed boundaries, from Letterman to Colbert. But I do think that specific line was tasteless and punching in the wrong direction.

An on-air apology or short suspension would make sense. Firing feels disproportionate and sets a scary precedent for satire.
