Anyone know why everyone is so willing to GIVE AWAY an upright piano?

I've seen dozens of ads in various papers and online over the past 30 or 40 years where people are GIVING AWAY upright pianos!! Those things must cost a small fortune brand new! Is there something very wrong with them or is there just no longer a market for uprights, anymore?

Why is it no one gives away grand or baby grand pianos? You gotta buy those from someone.

Probably because most of them are not worth a lot for resale and they're heavy requiring special equipment to move. My grandparents had one that I gave away after they passed.

One of my cousins was interested in taking it but was quoted over a grand to have it moved from the basement of my grandparents home and transported to another city.

It also wasn't in the best shape so would have had to have been refinished and tuned professionally. In the end it simply wasn't worth the trouble.

The thing was worth maybe $1000-2000 and weighed around 800lbs.

Ultimately I ended up putting it up for sale on kijiji and gave it away to someone who was willing to remove it from their basement. It took 4 guys and they ended damaging it during the removal.

My parents donated the huge piano from my grandparents. It was decades old, couldn’t be properly tuned anymore and there was no one around to play it. It had to be picked up by some specialists with a truck.

Because they're heavy, need expensive tuning and now most music can be found recorded

To answer the update... they are rarer but I did see one in a furniture charity shop for £500

When I moved i gave away the piano my family had whin I was growing up to a grand niece. An upright. Perhaps thats why these were being given away. They had to move.
