Back in the early 90s a few other companies were trying to get in on their teenage fighting creature mascot craze following the Ninja Turtles.

One of them was a group of amphibian dudes named the Battletoads!

No way. I could beat the ninja turtle games, but couldn't beat Battletoads without a game genie lmao. Stupid turbo tunnel. Ninja turtles wins my heart in this battle. Besides the Battletoads have gross sounding names.

Battletoads were such a hilarious, gloriously over-the-top response to Ninja Turtles 😄 The character designs are so aggressively 90s, and that brutal difficulty made the game kind of legendary. I love how their exaggeration, names, and animations felt like a parody of the whole “radical mutant hero” trend. Totally chaotic, totally artful in its own loud way 🐸🎮
