Should the windmill be left colourful?

A windmill was painted to match the colours of Mr Urdd, a beloved children's character for a eisteddfod festival back in May on Yns Môn. It was only supposed to be temporary, but now the owner and locals want to keep it painted white/red/green.

But the local authorities say no, it's a historical monument, and back to white, it must go.

So who's right? I personally can't see the harm in keeping it stripped if it makes people happy.

I think it should go back to white if those are the colors windmills have in your area. In my area, colors are either white for stone built mills or unpainted wood for wooden structures.

As the owner of a water mill that has been restored back to full working order and classified as a historical monument, I think this type of buildings should as closely resemble the way they looked originally. In the end, they are part of our cultural heritage.

I don't think you're wrong about this, but in this particular case, this is not an old or historically meaningful structure. It's just a windmill, like many of the others in that country. The color that it's painted makes people happy, and for that reason alone it should stay that way. This is not a historical monument by any means.

So Mr. Urdd is a candy corn of a different ethnicity? Why not keep the colors, no harm in it. I say this knowing how particular such things can be in UK however. There was this conversation about authorized thatchers and how much ox blood goes into that iconic Suffolk pink house paint when I was there. They'll make 'em keep it white.

I wouldn't have issue with the owner choosing what they wish and it kinda fun. But I also prefer the white.

Historic protection usually aims to preserve “authentic” appearance, but heritage is also about living culture. If the community loves Mr Urdd colors and the paint doesn’t damage the structure, I’d argue it actually adds cultural value.

Maybe a compromise works: keep it colorful for festivals, then return to white after an agreed period.

Our Marxist powermad authorities here in the UK want all of our old antiques & buildings to look rustic and decrepit for a modern sense of "Vibes".

I would much rather we actually preserved the mindset of the people who constructed these things to begin with, as that keeps them alive.

Castles were whitewashed and looked stunning, yet they never whitewash castles anymore and leave the stones bare to the elements.

Here with the windmills case it's laughably the opposite.

I've never been, but as the center of ancient Druidism Ynys Môn holds a special place in my heart. The Aberffraw dynasty that ruled the kingdom of Gwynedd (who took Ynys Môn from invading Irish pirates), used to rule the kingdom of Rheged before it was destroyed. Rheged was a kingdom that stretched across all of Cumbria & Lancashire (where I live) and that means they descended from the legendary Urien.
