But the local authorities say no, it's a historical monument, and back to white, it must go.
So who's right? I personally can't see the harm in keeping it stripped if it makes people happy.

I think it should go back to white if those are the colors windmills have in your area. In my area, colors are either white for stone built mills or unpainted wood for wooden structures.
As the owner of a water mill that has been restored back to full working order and classified as a historical monument, I think this type of buildings should as closely resemble the way they looked originally. In the end, they are part of our cultural heritage.
So Mr. Urdd is a candy corn of a different ethnicity? Why not keep the colors, no harm in it. I say this knowing how particular such things can be in UK however. There was this conversation about authorized thatchers and how much ox blood goes into that iconic Suffolk pink house paint when I was there. They'll make 'em keep it white.
In general I think historical windmills should look how they did back then.

I honestly like both. There's an argument for the classy historical look and the colors are fun with more visual interest. At the end of the day it's not a major part of my life.
Paint it whatever you wanna paint it that’s up to you guys. I’ll support your decision. Poppy
Just paint the surrounding buildings in the same way.
... 🤭
I'm not familiar with the character, but I definitely think it looks better in the red, green and white. I don't see the harm personally.
The white is more aesthetically pleasing. I'm also in favor of retaining the original historical/cultural appearance.
It should go with whatever color theme the other buildings in the area have going on
Maybe they should never have defaced it in the first place?
Windmills are sacred
It is very wasteful to paint then paint it back to white. It'll need at least three coats.
@purplepoppy have a Happy Day wherever color you choose
Who ever is the owner of the windmill should decide.
Whoever owns the property it sits on has the final say
Black would be better.
Keep the stripes. The world needs more color
Does it come in black?
what the fuck are windmills for?
Milling wind
you could mistake one for a giant and have a nice tilt with it
@robocop666 A quarter of the country is below sea level, right?
I'd looks better painted in my opinion

I’d keep it colorful 💚❤️🤍
Historic protection usually aims to preserve “authentic” appearance, but heritage is also about living culture. If the community loves Mr Urdd colors and the paint doesn’t damage the structure, I’d argue it actually adds cultural value.
Maybe a compromise works: keep it colorful for festivals, then return to white after an agreed period.
