I like non-venomous spiders but have to admit that most spiders do creep me out a bit. Some are gorgeous, some are really cute. I just don't care to handle them and they don't want to be handled, either.
I had a smallish wolf spider in my kitchen sink one morning a few weeks ago. It was trapped because it couldn't climb up the sides. I got my hand beneath it and it tried to avoid me a few times. Finally, it perched on my finger an rested there calmly as I carried it outside.

On the other hand, I love snakes. I had a couple for pets when I was a kid. One was a large California king that I used to carry around the neighborhood.

I live in a rural area in the California foothills now on 30 acres. I see snakes every once in a while. Usually gopher snakes but an occasion California king. On a couple of occasions, I found gopher snakes in the middle of the road near my house, saved them from getting run over, and brought them home to my garden.
The first time I did that, I called my wife out and held it up so she could touch it to learn that shakes aren't cold and slimy. They are also quite docile. I held its head up next to her cheek and it gave her a sweet snaky kiss with its tongue. I said "Awww, it loves you." She kind of cringed but it taught her that snakes are nice. I also told her how beneficial they are to have in the garden.

The only poisonous snakes we have in our part of the country are rattlers and we run across them in our garden once in a while. The kind we have aren't aggressive or very large.
They aren't out to hurt anybody. They only strike when the fee threatened and they almost always warn you first. The last thing they want to do is bite something they don't plan to eat.
They do good work eating rodents so I don't mind them around as long as they aren't near my house.
My wife has learned to differentiate them from other snakes and she calls me when she finds one. I have a snake catching stick and gab them, put them in a box, close the flaps, and drive them to another part of my property to release them.
I don't kill rattlers. I like them. They aren't mean. I really hate it when people automatically kill them.

"My Girl Bill" was another good one. I wonder what ever happened to Jim Stafford and if he was related to Terry Stafford, the Elvis Presley soundalike.

I do! I think both spiders and snakes are really interesting creatures.

Spiders definitely scare me a bit (I have a completely irrational fear of them lol), but I still think they’re fascinating.

And I actually held a snake for the first time recently, and it was a lot more fun than I expected. It was surprisingly calm and chill…

I don’t mess with spiders as long as they leave me alone. My house has plenty.

  • I’m weirdly okay with them 😅
Spiders are kind of cool to me, especially the tiny house ones, since they eat bugs. I’d never kill one, I usually relocate them with a cup. 🕷️
Snakes I respect from a distance. I love their patterns and movement, but only behind glass or with a pro around. 🐍

Certain spiders can be very helpful in eating all the bugs that can destroy the earth, like the golden orb spiders, wolf spiders, tarantulas and certain jumping spiders. The golden orb spiders spin those really cool webs. The two spiders that are actually harmful and fatal to the bite if left untreated are the black widow are the brown recluse. The brown recluse has a bite that can kill.

Snakes are really cool animals but it depends on what kind of snake is safe to be around. Some are very venomous like the black mamba, king cobra, cottonmouth moccasin and all the brands of rattlesnakes. Some other venomous snakes that aren’t as harmful are copperheads and the coral snakes. Sometimes you can get confused with the coral snake and the milk snake. The coral snake is venomous, but the milk snake isn’t. Here’s the rhyme that you can remember:
Red touch yellow can kill a fellow.
Red touch black is good for Jack.

Even if you name is not Jack, red touch black is the non-venomous milk snake. Other snakes like pythons, black snakes and king snakes are actually very useful because some of them kill by constriction and only eat other snakes. Those three that I mentioned make great pets.

I guess because I'm not an expert on either, I don't really fuck with them in case they turn out to be venomous. I'm pretty scared of venom. Not of the actual spider or snake or the bite itself. I deal with them when I have to. I usually just relocate spiders in the house to the outside without killing them. If they're in my room, because I guess I don't like the idea of sleeping and potentially find them crawling on my face when I wake up, I make sure they're dead and flushed down the toilet. You don't get to fuck with my bedroom.

I'm good with 'em both. They keep pests such as rodents, and flies populations down. We used to have a 4 ft visitor come up the drain and into the laundry room regularly at the animal shelter. The room next door was full of bags of Hill's Science Diet... the rats were very attracted.

I was fearless of snakes as a kid. In a kind of karate kid move. I caught a 6-footer when it tried to strike, right behind the head.
