What the quote really implies, certainly in thr 19th Century, men's lives were pretty well set - married, kids - so they just had to keep that life going.

It's not much different today...

In crass terms, you can fuck around in your life, but, as an adult, sooner or later, you gotta grow up and have the adult life you were meant to have. Most of the subsequent life is just trying to stay alive.

Think about it like this...

When you're a kid going to a restaurant with your parents, they are in charge and take care of everything including likely ordering for you.

When you are a young care-free adult, you get to go to that restaurant and have the excitement of reading the menu and making your own selection and then paying for it with money left over.

But, once you have your freedom stripped by a spouse and kids and a mortgage, you become a wage slave just trying to keep everybody alive. You've become your parents.

In Twain's time, that time was almost certainly by 27 for most men. In the modern era, perhaps a little later, but it's the same basic trap: creating a family kills freedom because you then have to do what is necessary to keep the family alive. That is considerably harder than it was in Twain's time when life was simpler.
