"On The Beach", the controversial 1959 film based on the 1957 Nevil Shute novel about the end of the world due to the spread of lethal radiation after a nuclear war in the Northern Hemisphere.

The United States Government refused to assist in the making of this film and did not want it made.

The movie opens (before the credits) with the American nuclear-powered submarine USS Sawfish, commanded by Captain Dwight Towers (Gregory Peck), verifying that it is approaching Melbourne, on the southern coast of Australia. As it surfaces heading to Melbourne, the opening title and credits appear. The time is the (future year) of January 1964 during the Southern Hemisphere summer.

Seeing the submarine and hearing a horn from it, a lighthouse operator contacts authorities of the incoming sub. Coming from his radio in the background is this:

"... and our scientists disagree as to when radiation will reach Australia, the atomic war has ended but the Prime Minister reports no proof of survival of human life anywhere except here."

So, besides those Americans already in Australia, Towers and his crew are the only Americans still alive.

Much of the action takes place primarily in the Melbourne area as the residents expect to die in 5 months from radiation sickness as the radiation slowly drifts southward.

However, there is still some hope due to a theory that the radiation may be subsiding more quickly than expected in the polar regions so that life may be possible in, say, Antarctica. So, after getting the Sawfish ready, Admiral Bridie of the Australian Navy has the Sawfish go on a mission to the Arctic to see if this theory is true by measuring the radiation there. On board is an Australian scientist, Julian Osborn (Fred Astaire), who is in charge of taking the radiation measurements. He doesn't believe the theory. Also on board is an Australian naval officer, Peter Holmes (Anthony Perkins), who is also newly married and father of an infant daughter Jennifer with his wife Mary. Once the sub reaches Point Barrow, the northernmost point in Alaska and on the coast of the Arctic Ocean, they take the measurements. The Geiger counter is clickling loudly; the radiation is still well "in the red" and even higher than in the mid-Pacific. The theory is false. It seems all are doomed.

The men ask about the war - a war they weren't really involved in. Julian explains to them:
“The war started when people accepted the idiotic principle that peace could be maintained – – by arranging to defend themselves with weapons they couldn’t possibly use – – without committing suicide.”

    https://www.youtube.com/embed/TMRZmZW5Uzc

During the mission, they discover an odd Morse Code-like radio signal coming from San Diego, so, after the trip to the Arctic, they plan to investigate. First, they head into San Francisco Bay and check out a silent San Francisco. One crewman, Swain, a native of SF, goes AWOL and leaves the sub and swims ashore. The captain orders the submarine spend the night on the floor of SF Bay. There's a moving scene the next morning. Swain is in a small boat fishing. The submarine rises next to the boat. Over a loudspeaker and external microphone system, the captain has a discussion with Swain who explains himself. He wants to be home "when it happens". The captain asks "What's it like?" Swain tells the captain his family is dead - everybody is dead. He asks the captain how long he has; about a week... After some goodbyes, the sub leaves for San Diego.

    https://www.youtube.com/embed/8gllhJMib_A

In San Diego, one crewman in a hazmat suit goes to investigate the signal for a hopeful sign of life. He discovers a power plant still running. In an office at that plant, he discovers an empty Coke bottle attached to the string of a window shade of an open window. From the gentle wind through the window, the Coke bottle occassionally taps a radio telegraph key; it's been the source of the odd signals. The crewman then uses the telegraph sending out Morse code telling of what happened. He returns and the Sawfish heads back to Australia.

Shortly after arriving, Dwight learns from the Australian admiral Bridie that the American office in Brisbane Australia (on the central east coast) has told Dwight he is now in command of all US naval forces. Dwight wants to reply but the admiral tells him that he can't reply as the office has "closed down" - they're all dead in Brisbane now.

After some time with his love interest, drunken slut Moira (Ava Gardner), Dwight returns to the port and is told by a crewman that Crewman Ackerman is sick. Ackerman is the first to get sick from radiation. The Australian doctor caring for Ackerman informs Dwight: It's now here in Melbourne... and he's suffering the first symptoms himself.

Eventually, all the characters have their different final destinies.

Some of the men have established relationships with the Australians and ask to stay. Dwight permits it. He then gives a speech to the remaining men asking them what they want to do and to take a vote on it. They already voted. They want to be home "when it happens".

Meanwhile, the Australian Government has been dispensing suicide pills for when the radiation comes so people won't have to suffer.

Dwight talks with Julian; he checks the radiation counter - they're in the red now and it's gotten significantly worse overnight.

After Dwight says his goodbye to Julian, Julian, a bachelor who once loved Moira, commits suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning in his garage with his Ferrari's engine running.

We see Peter and Mary in bed preparing to take their pills with a cup of tea. They will after giving the baby (who is sick) her pill.

Dwight tells Moira he loves her but he has to go with the men.

The Sawfish sails off and Moira watches; unseen, we know she will take her pill.

Moira staring out to sea as the Sawfish sets off on one final futile mission from which there will be no return.
Moira staring out to sea as the Sawfish sets off on one final futile mission from which there will be no return.

After the Sawfish submerges, we then finally see scenes of a silent Melbourne. Everyone has died there likely in their homes from taking their pills.

    =====
I've seen this movie quite a few times, but I've watched it multiple times this past month when it was free on YouTube. (It's was free on Tubi last week.) Now that I am much older, I've come to appreciate how this movie was made - the screenplay, how it was directed, the cinematography, the sound track. Nevil Shute was very upset about the movie (and he died shortly after it was released). He didn't like that Americans played Australian characters and the ages of the actors was considerably different than the characters in the novel. But, he hated that some of the scenes weren't graphic such as the destruction of San Francisco in the novel, but SF is basically untouched in the movie but just that everyone is dead. Mostly, he was upset with Dwight in the movie; he wanted Dwight to remain faithful to his dead wife and wrote that Dwight scuttled the sub at the end (meaning he deliberately sank it to avoid it going into enemy hands). While I find Dwight's relationship with Moria a bit hard to believe, I do think the screenplay and director Stanley Kramer's choices made for a more effective and touching film.

If you go searching on YouTube, ignore anything like "deleted scene" or "alternative ending" or "16 weird facts about"... they are all horseshit. 100% horseshit and clickbait and slop. Don't bother wasting your time.

Oh boy…. that STUCK with me?🤔 I mostly watch comedies, so they aren’t usually powerful, lmao. Maybe the 21/22 Jump Street movies were the last ones that stuck with me in terms of quotable lines.

I guess Avatar in 3D kind of did? Just visually though. The movie was fine, but like I said, I’m a comedy guy.

Maybe we’re going all the way back to Saving Private Ryan. That final scene at Arlington Cemetery when elderly Private Ryan is at [no spoilers🤐🤫]’s grave, and he turns to his wife and says “Tell me I’ve lived a good life. Tell me I’m a good man.” Jesus, man…😭😭😭😭😭😭

Jump Streets are the ones with Ice Cube? So corny but so enjoyable

Oh, boy. Saving Private Ryan. It’s when Tom Hank’s hand stops tremoring for me. But yes, then the cemetery scene right thereafter. It’s too much. Great movie

Project Hail Mary. It involved a school teacher so it hits a note but the book had such a heart warming side to it that the need to bring that out about desperation to find a solution was wonderfully brought out.

There’s been nothing that has stuck with me in so many years.. Nothing is as good as the older days. Probably Braveheart that was an outstanding movie. and of course, the Rocky movies 🥊

I wish they wouldn't have added this stupid (and unhistorical) love angle with the French princess. That's my only gripe with Braveheart.
