Disney Star Wars vs old Expanded Universe: which era do you prefer?

When Disney purchased Star Wars in 2012, they decanonized hundreds of books, comics, and video games. Adult novels themselves numbered over 150.

It was a very detailed universe with many thousands of years of history. In particular, much of it centered on Han and Leia's twins, Jacen and Jaina. This is an Era that Disney tackled with its Sequels led by Rey. The Disney films lost the audience and made a once powerful empire into a franchise of box office flops.

Before releasing its films, one of Disneys first actions was to decanonize all previous material and write their own. Sometimes, they stole directly from the old materiel (such as rewriting the character of Thrawn). More villainous, they denied royalties to past authors (Alan Dean Foster, for example, who got into legal battles with them).

Narratively, a lot is lost. Luke Skywalker who in decades of pre Disney material became the greatest of all Jedi, creating a new Jedi Order from nothing, becomes in Disney a hermit who is afraid of facing evil, wants the Jedi to end, and considers ending his nephews life. Han Solo, who in legends became a leader of the New Republic and devoted husband and father, loses all of those traits in Disney where he becomes an absentee father.

Many choices made by Disney created conflicts in the fan base, who saw their favorite characters destroyed, and new poorly written characters enforced. The entire universe itself becomes confused and Disney spends years canceling various projects while trying to figure out how to keep the franchise alive it put on life support.
