Is it normal for my step brother to be protective of me and take care of me?

My parents divorced when I was eight years old because my dad had a drinking problem. At age 15, my mom married my step dad and we moved into his house with my 17-year old step brother. In high school we fought a lot, he left for college, and we only really saw each other on holidays. I got into a graduate program near my stepdad’s condo and he suggested I move in there. My stepbrother got a promotion at his job and his company transferred him to an office near the condo and he moved in. Initially, we rarely spoke to each other and just kept to ourselves. Recently, my biological father has been having health problems. One night my dad had to suddenly go into emergency surgery. My step brother heard me crying and offered to drive me to the hospital. He dropped me off at the hospital, picked up food for us, and ate it in the waiting room with me. After the surgery was over, he went home to get me clothes, my computer to work on homework, and some snacks. He picked me up from the hospital the next day, he talked to me and said supportive things on the drive home. Two months ago, I broke up with my boyfriend and he came over to give me back a spare key - he tried to hookup with me, I told him to leave, and he started yelling at me. My step-brother and his friend were in the living room, he came into my room, told him to get out of my room, and walked him out of the condo. Afterwards, he came into my room, I was crying, and he hugged me and said that I deserve to be treated much better. Guys, do you feel protective of your step-sister?
