Tradition dictated that for men, to remove one's hat was a sign of respect. They had to remove them when meeting new people, in church, around women, indoors, etc. The majority of those rules didn't and still don't apply to women. So it would stand to reason, given societal norms which still mostly hold up today, that to not take ones hat off is showing disrespect. Genuinely though, hats are meant to keep the sun off your eyes and shield your face from the weather---none of those apply to being indoors, so just like sunglasses, why would one need to wear a hat indoors. I think most men or women who don't take them off indoors basically are having a bad hair day, are bald, or don't care what you think or what society says they 'should' do.

If you had brain surgery or you are sick or you have any condition that requires your head to be covered it us fine. If you wear it for another reason it is silly, not disrespectful.
I’d probably say it’s because the person seems like their hidden or hiding their face from everyone there. It’s similar to wearing sunglasses in doors, in which you can’t see the other person’s eyes so when you’re having a discussion with them there’s a sort of detachment or awkwardness present. When you’re at the dinner table, it’s assumed to be a social and bonding event where everyone can be transparent and free to discuss with each other. Perhaps wearing something like a hat can give a sort of detached vibe from you, where the people around you can’t fully see your facial reactions to certain things. Wearing a hat in this sense might offer some blockade to deep social dialogue, even if it’s just slight
Wearing a hat indoors offends the hearth spirit.
It comes from a very old tradition/superstition that wearing a hat inside offended the kind spirits and made them leave so your home would be plagued by bad luck.
Culturally we dropped the context but generally just consider it poor manners now.

Men aren't supposed to wear hats indoors period. Like is it that sunny in your dining room? It would be like walking around indoors with an umbrella because it ties your outfit together.
Now i'm not actually that extreme but … yeah that's the traditional view.I think it comes from the idea that, traditionally, you would put on a hat when going outdoors. So, to sit down to a meal wearing a hat, it gives the impression that you're in a rush.
That's my own perception of it, I could be wrong. It depends on the type of hat.
I will wear my hat everywhere proudly if it represents my country or culture 👳
But I will not wear a hat used to protect us against heat, the modern hat👲or a professional hat 👮 at the dinner table.
Not because it is disrespectful, but because It will feel better.
For example, wearing a wrist watch for a long time can be irritating.
Similarly, wearing a hat can be irritating at a time when we want to relax and eat.Arn't hats used for protection from heat and weathef outside? I guess it could be seen as no different then having an umbrella open and over you in a store.
It's an old English custom which spread. I think hats in general are pretty stupid nowadays unless you actually use them to keep warm or actually shade your eyes from the sun
Honestly, I never really understood that.
I mean, when hats were all huge in past centuries perhaps but - I couldn't care less.I mean if it's a hat that's wide brimmed then yeah please take that off but if it's just a baseball cap or a beanie it doesn't even matter
its like wearing sunglasses at the dinner table lol... people like to see who they are sitting beside...
Yeah it is especially with people other than friends at a restaurant or something. I mean its ok if your wearing it while snacking with your friends but its kinda not recommended elsewhere
It's all symbolism, something I'll never understand, but I'll have to if I want people to not yell at me for irrational reasons.
It isn't, some people are just have their minds in the past.
I don't believe it is.
But certain people do because it's a place to hide in, and some because they don't like the whole funky thing because they're old af and then passed it on...It's a military thing you take your hat of to signify respect
I’ve worn glasses at night. I don’t really fucking care.
Because when you take a pic, your hat will be in pic rather than person sitting next to you:-)
It's not. It's just a holdover from the days of yore.
Yeah
hey, question, if you're wearing nothing BUT a hat, are you considered nude?Hats are for outside.
Because someone said it was
It’s a white people thing
