I wouldn’t really call my situation creepy, but it’s kind of sad. I have a little cousin… Well… He’s 17 now… He has ADHD and a heart condition for context. ADHD and heart conditions do not make people “creepy” or “weird” in any way. However… he was raised by his mother, my aunt, for the majority of his life because his father passed away from a heart attack due to the same heart condition. Ever since he was a child, his mother has sheltered him because he can’t over exert himself due to his heart. So, with that being said, he has never had friends because he cannot go out and do things like average boys his age would (sports, friend groups, etc). To make matters worse, she doesn’t allow him to play video games to at least connect with some people online. Here’s the sad part; Since he is so sheltered, he only has his little nephew (his brother’s son) to hang out with when his mom babysits. His nephew is 5. So, lots of hide and go seek, kid cartoons, etc… He is stuck in this child-like brain, and he acts like he is about 8 years old. His nephew is more mature than him at times. It’s truly sad and it’s not right at all. I worry about what his future is going to look like. He does homeschool online, he doesn’t drive, he doesn’t have friends, he doesn’t go anywhere, he has no job, he has no skills, he has nothing. I don’t expect 17 year olds to have all that, but at least some socialization, ya know? I worry that when he grows up, he will hate his mother for what she has done to him and lash out. I don’t think he has those capabilities because I think he is totally oblivious to reality, but it’s saddening.
