Why am I nice to people who are mean to me?

I don’t know why, but I have always kept people around me even if they betray me or are downright mean to me. I can’t bring myself to stand up for myself out of fear of being horrible as well. Why am I like this? Is it because of low self esteem or something else?

Always be nice to people... But don't continue to stay around people who do you dirty. Be the bigger person. Being mean is never okay. And 2 wrongs never make a right. You watch two people be mean to each other and you will see things only get worse and the pain last for years. Use the golden rule but don't keep continuing to let inconsiderate people be around you.

And you have poor self-image; you fear and feel like you can't do anything of any consequence. You can change that though but you don't do that by being mean to others.

Sounds like low self esteem I used to be like that as well. Honestly it's not bad to stand up for yourself and I think it actually makes people respect you more. You don't deserve to be treated with disrespect. Maybe talk with a therapist and see why you think like that. It does help! I wish you the best!

maybe your trying to make them stop being mean to you by being nice. you need to stop letting people opress you and stand up to protect yourself in a healthy way.
