There’s not much you can do beyond let them know they can safely express themselves to you when they’re ready, and try to prepare yourself to offer whatever acceptance is necessary to keep your word. If you’re not certain you can be that friend, don’t make the offer.

I’d let them know it’s important to not let it bottle up or it can become poisonous to themselves. I’d first let them express their pain and emotions then proceed to help them heal while providing tips to avoid the building up problems

You can let him/her know you are there to listen if they want to talk. Otherwise, allow them to deal with their emotions as they see fit. Not everyone needs to "get it all out" and being a reliable friend that respects their boundaries is the best thing you can do.
