I don't know what your background is so I don't know if it helps - I read in a book that being kind to others improves your mental health and can reverse disease too. As a religious person I believe if you are kind and kind in secret - you will be rewarded with kindness from life and from people. Its important you are kind to glorify God and not yourself or you might not benefit yourself when you do kindness. I believe vanity is a source of depression. The bible says you cannot serve both money and God. You could rephrase that to mean you cannot serve both vanity and justice. Or you cannot serve both selflessness and selfishness. Or you cannot serve both purpose and indulgence. And Psalms says that idolatry leads to people's sorrow and misery and social isolation, even those with hundreds of friends die of loneliness when they worship social status symbols. Beautiful women who make millions and have thousands of loyal fans commit suicide when they worship beauty, because they feel lonely inside.
