How can I be more genuine to someone?

There's this guy in my class who's pretty nice and smart. I wanna become friends with him, and I noticed he's usually alone even outside of class, like me. But unlike me, people talk to him kinda often, mostly to get help. That's usually how I would try to start a convo since I'm really shy, but I don't want to seem like just another classmate getting help from him. So how can I seem different from them and appear to be more genuine as trying to be friends?
