Is it normal for backup cameras to go kaput?

the one on my 2015 vehicle just stopped working out of nowhere (showing black) and wiggly to the touch. Mechanic says to buy another

Considering the camera is 8 years old (if installed with the vehicle and not aftermarket) that's a pretty good stint for electronics. It could easily be some rust at the connections, etc.

I would price a new one and see if it is a lot more than someone taking a look to see if it is just a connection. Whatever the cheaper option is. If they can reconnect it, then it is likely the less expensive option. However, you don't want them to go through the entire vehicle and find out you need a new camera and not have one with you. They would charge you to take everything apart and put things back together. So buy the camera you want, bring it with you and if they have to install a new camera, have them install the one you brought. If not, return the camera in the box and get your money back.
