Mothers, do you prefer to work or be home with your children?

This question is for mothers, but others can chime in too.

The financial reality for most families with children today is that both parents need to work to remain financially stable. My perception has always been that most mothers want to work and would prefer not to be home full time with their children. But a Gallop poll actually showed the opposite, that a majority of mothers, whether employed or not, actually would prefer to be home with their children if they could afford it.

I'm curious how the mothers of GAG feel. Please share your opinions.

I'll chip in, as a man who's wife stays at home to watch children; she absolutely loves it. She is considering homeschooling the rest of the children in a few years, we will see, but overall it's been a great idea and neither of us are looking back.

I was a career woman before kids. I stayed home for 5 years till both kids start school.
I am back to work since. Since I share the same schedule as my kids, I have a lot of time with them. It’s working out well.
my second husband is now a stay home husband/dad… we are really fortunate to be able to give kids these connections.
I do disagree with needing both income to raise a family. that’s another topic.

I was talking to my coworker… she told me something about clipping coupons while raising her 4 kids as a stay at home mom 15 years ago. Her husband was a cop. Cops don’t make much. But they have no more mortgage. I think it’s just how one wish to live.

cost of living nowadays is significantly more expensive than 15 years ago. In 1960, a cup of ice cream means 5 cent. Now, that same cup of ice cream is 6-7 dollars. Cost of living has been outpacing salary increases. The cost of a college education has doubled since 2000. Life was easier 15 years ago than now. Life was cheaper 15 years ago than now.

Plus how the fuck are you going to send your kids to college if you can't even afford to feed them?
do you want your kid to work in fast food because you couldn't afford to send them to college?

When I started, my salary was $30k. Someone asked me, where do I go from there. $30k is not bad because I don’t buy anything I need. Next, invest smart.
20 years later. Our kids college funds are all set up if they so chose to go to college.

I don’t push them to become a herd of sheep to go to college. If they have the brain to do something outside of college why pay $50k a yr?
Because what we are being taught by school and by our govt.
I am a school teacher.

My teacher friend raised her 4 kids in the 90s.
City income for cops and teachers wear low to raise 4 kids and now they have paid off their house recently. They never ate out, clip coupons, and paid $25 for camp sites to go on vacation. Their home was about &200k on a $40, - $50 k salary.
I was asking her if anyone still clip coupon’s nowadays…. That seems to be the past.
The new American dream is to be in debt. Just Becareful how you plan your future.

how many colleges in the US cost 5,000 a year? Not many. A few of them exist, but not the vast majority. I know a few of them exist only in NYC. But if you lived in florida, you would have to pay for your child's flight to NYC and dorm room which is another 20,000 a year.

Truth is, if you make 30,000 that is barely enough to support 1 person. don't even talk about a family of 4 or 5.

When I was growing up, my mother made 24,000 a year to support our family of 4. We lived under poverty in the housing projects where life was hell. Crime was rampant. We were frequently victims of robbery racism and assault by the ghetto blacks. I was lucky enough to have received full scholarship to a university where I paid nothing over my 5 yr term at college. On the other hand, I had turned down offers from 2 other prestigious universities that I really want to attend simply because it was too expensive. Had I not received that scholarship, college wouldn't have been a reality for me. There were a few out of state colleges that costed just 6,000 a year. But it was 30 miles away and my family were too poor to afford a car to drive there.

you're really limiting your child's choices in life by not having the resources to provide for them.

Plus, not many houses in today's market are 200k. Most houses are 300k minimum.
And if you have an income of only 40-50k, the banks won't even lend to you.

When I was 23, I wanted to learn how to drive a car so I can move out of state for better job opportunities. But my parents had always been too poor to afford a car. So I paid 100 dollars for a few 1.5 hour sessions at the driving school. Then I realized I simply could not afford to pay it. It was too expensive. I was helpless. I watched my other college classmates who were younger than me , drive like pros, could go anywhere they wanted, didn't have to work a second job so they could pay for driving lessons. I watched other kids live with their parents well into their 20s so they could save money (to buy a house) while my parents desperately tried to get rid of me out of the house because they couldn't afford me anymore.

There is a reason why kids born to poor parents tend to do worse in life compared to kids born to financially stable parents.

Life is significantly harder for a poor child compared to kids who had enough resources to grow up well. And its quite sickening how some parents think kids do not need resources to grow up. Resources aren't optional. Every kid deserves to have enough resources to grow up well prepared.

And for the broke parent who thinks that vacations, martial arts schools, piano classes, summer camp, is unnecessary. You're wrong. Because these activities make up a lot of someone's childhood memories. Its a way for your kids to have fun, remember what they did during childhood- which can become very precious as they get older.

I watched in shock in my 20s where I saw people younger than me talk about how much fun they had when they went to Guyana with their family a few years ago. Or some memories they had in hawaii when they were young. On the other hand, I had never stepped out of my state due to my parent's lack of a car. Don't even talk about my parents buying a plane ticket to Guyana.

As of currently, college degrees are still required if you want to become a teacher, doctor, lawyer, nurse, accountant, work in HR, finance. Vast majority of professional positions still require a college degree. You're seriously limiting your child's life choices by being unable to send them to college. Something they wanted to do but mom couldn't just afford to pay for it. I don't think its something you should boast about or have pride in talking about.

I definitely understand what poor/proverty/broke/under privilege/no shoes/clothes/food and living in high crime neighborhood means and no resources. I lived through all that. My parents raised us 4 with $700. a month income with $365. rent for 3 years. while our mom stayed home with my new born little sister who is 11 years. younger than me. He would come home at night from work and have gotten robbed his month of salary in the subway.

We all took jobs at 11, 13, 16 years. old to help out. We all put our money together for a better future. None of us drove till my oldest brother at 24 years old got a car. We were in govt. assistant for 3 years. once my mom went back to work making pennies... we stopped seeking govt. money. Still living under proverty... we make the best with the little we had.

So from having $0 dollar to later on gotten a college degree (not my brother).. we are doing okay.
I, divorced from my ex. hub. I decided to not take anything and again started from $0. that was 12 years ago. I restarted and rebuild myself so that I can be that single mom who can raise our kids as best as we can while in two separated houses. I was in a 200 - 300 sq ft. apt. while rebuilding myself. My kids thought that was a cute little shoes box and still love the warmth and love being together.
Kids don't ask for much when we can raise them to appreciate the little that we have.
They now know, they are "privilege" but they are not entitle.

Our decisions will take us to the direction of gratefulness and well being of our future.

I'm in graduate school right now and I can't even afford to buy myself a decent box of pens for class. My last box of pens were the cheapest box I found at staples which were on sale. All of them either jammed or leaked ink. None of them lasted longer than 2 months.

Its not fun.

I work with 99% women and my own mother is a drama queen full of complications.
No I make things simple but doesn't mean I didn't work hard.

Based on what I read... it sounds like you have made poor choices.

My best friend went to a state school, paid her way through $30k a yr. and became a nurse. There is also a city school she could have gone to, to pay $6k a yr. and become a nurse. so these are choices people can make. ... so for these two examples, they both come out making about the same as a nurse in hospitals. My niece decided to attend NYU paying $60k to become a nurse... so she will come out making again... a nurse salary but with $240. k tuition she has to pay. She is 2 years. in and wants to transfer to a state school that's $30k... but too late... so... there you go.

I hear you, but I don't agree with you. Being able to accept our own mistakes is growth and make better life decisions... what I am hearing is... you are a victim of the system and have no choice but have to have gone through a 3rd degreee with no money to buy pens.

Do you know how hard it is to get into a CUNY nursing school in nyc? You need ridiculously high grades. The competition is ridiculously high due to its cheap tuition. Around 220 people apply every year and only around 40 get accepted. There are only 40 seats for their nursing program every year. Meaning there are almost 200 people who get rejected per year

Like I said you have no idea how hard life is today. Just pure arrogance and ignorance.

My friends and I have never been too good of studoents to be qualified to be accepted into cuny schools. I get that Sophia Davies in City College is hard to get in.

I do know…life is not easy till we leanr from and make better choices. This can be financial, emotional, medical, physical choices about who we are and what we want. We have to take control of our life.

I too had to pay for my own tuitions for my grad school and so did my nurse friend.

My niece? I have no idea… $240k
My other nephew $280k debt.
My other newphew $12k … so how will they pay? I don’t know.

I've been saving my whole life. Life here in nyc is expensive. College is expensive. I"m not interested in clipping coupons for the rest of my life. The reason why I am getting into debt is because I want this debt to propel me to a better direction in life where I don't need to be worried about money any more. I want to provide a better life for myself and my children. I want to do the things I want without worrying about money. I want my kids to attend elite private schools and send them to good colleges.

I have a bachelors in accounting and also a bachelors in nursing. Now I am going for a nurse practitioner's program.

The thing I crave is not money but rather the time , fun, good times that i sacrificed throughout the years I spent locked up in my room studying on weekends and working on weekdays. I have missed out on opportunities going to clubs, meeting people, dating on Friday and Saturday nights.

I clipped coupons when I was a teenager helping our mom when dad was the only one working. I was like 13-17 years. old. My work friend did when she was stay home mom raising 4 kids. these are life choices, to save so can be better later. If I had to do it 10 years. ago, I still would. I did have to make other scrafices when my ex. husband wanted to divorce me then... and as a new single mom, I had to rebuild myself from nothing. I live in NYC 30 years. of my life time. I know what its like to live in NYC and what its like to be poor. Still I refused to be a victim to let the govt/society dictate my life.
Something is off.. if you have been saving your whole life and can't afford pens.
You have a degree in accountant, which means you are pretty good with numbers/money. I am terrible at it because my older sister got all the math genes. I failed math in HS... so I didn't now have the best grade going to college. I was working, taking care of my little sister, my family and going to school.
I paid every penny from my own pocket, because I refuse to get loans. I learned about the credit card system in college... I made sure to pay off every month. So that I will never be in debt.
Party? sigh... that will never gave me the freedom that I have now if I wasted my time going out clubbing like my friends did. what I "missed" I am glad I did... would not have do much to get me here today.

NYC tuition is $7500. a yr.
NYS - SUNY - is $10k. a yr.

When can you go back to work?

My college best friend grad. with a psychology major from city college, went to Buffalo for her nursing grad. school. have been working in Mt. Sini as nurse partitioner since.. she is all stressed out, but she is making good money.

Its not that I can't afford to buy a box of pens. I just don't want to splurge 15-20 dollars on a box of pens. And yes, there are actually people out there who spend that much on just pens. But I refuse to pay that much.

I am working right now part time. Sometimes I take days off work to maintain my sanity. My rent has gone up from 950 to 1200. I still have to pay next year's tuition to save up for. I do have a decent sum of money in the bank but its all for tuition and the possible expenses I would need for next year. So far, I haven't had a single day off in 2 months.

Its the scracifies that we make now, the seeds that we plan, that will bring us healthy fruit or rotten fruit. the choices are ours.
I have never regret any decisions I made in my life. The times, months, years, I shopped at $1. stories for cheaper stuff. Is now paid off that I can buy myself expensive stuff and that my kids have the college funds if they wish to go to college.
again... universities are only good for certain things. so I don't force them to... but if they do chose, they are all set. Because I made those scrafices all my life for the life I live now. Proud, debt free and kids college funds set and my retirement set...

I'm pretty sure my earning prospects will be quite incredible in just a few years. I am planning on becoming a travel NP where I would be able to rank in as much as 300k a year. Its pure torture going through school for this long and its taken a profound impact on my personal mental / physical health. But I think its growing up poor that really gave me the drive to make a better life for myself. I don't want my kids to go through the same struggles I had : from not being able to afford to learn how to drive to not even able to afford decent pens for school.

I would have to congratulate you for being a first-grade teacher for so long. Its tough work being around all those little kids all the time. I have worked at daycares and even though the kids are cute, they can be really difficult to manage/ or to teach at times. To be able to do a job like yours, it takes a lot of love and patience straight from the heart. My first-grade teacher from the year 1999-2000 still remembers me to this day.

I stayed home with my kids in my first marriage. After they started school, I was able to finish my education and still be home when they got home from school.

I also stay home with my kids from my second marriage, but now I also work from home. So now I have the best of both worlds.

I want to be home with my children while they are young. But as they get older, I want to go back to my career. Because I don't like wasting my life sitting 9 hours a day at home all by myself , doing nothing waiting for my kids to come back from school or my husband to come back from work. I want to make something out of my life. I want something more than just sitting at home.

Truth is, children do not stay at home with their moms as they get older. As they grow older, they spend vast majority of their time in school all day. Their daily hours at school only gets longer when they enter high school due to extracurricular activities, projects, clubs. So your talk about "staying home with the kids" is really just an unrealistic false portrayal of a housewife.

I agree that it’s important to have a career. Also…don’t neglect the importance of the mother being there for her kids. Even when they want to venture out during their teen years… in their heart, they still want to come back to their mom for support. The world is still a very big scary place for them.
My daughter is 15, son 13. We talk all the time and discuss anythng. I am always available for them. That’s why, my second husband whom I met here on gag is our stay at home dad/husband even if we work on budgeting with our kids. How to spend/save money. How to not get into debt.
My daughter came home, said her teacher asked who’s family talk about finances. She was the only one raised her hand.
Certain valuable education my kids get from home will never get from school.

Because i have spent over 50,000 on my masters degree. I dont get financial aid. And i can only work 3 days a week to maintain good grades in the program along with attending my clinical internship.

The bases argument has to do with if moms should stay home. I agree with you for a short time and have a career.
The time with the kids should be valuable moments.
Moms have certain jobs for the kids AND for the family. As we are both women, we must continue to teach them important skills schools don’t teach. We must keep the family together and not contribute to the downfall of the society.
Money will be there when we make good financial decisions.
If we go by what others say, if we make poor decisions in life, we have to be responsible and pay that price.

Good luck with your 3rd degree. Life is not easy till we decide to make it easy.

I have two nephews, older one is graduating with a $70k yearly situation. So… $280?
The brother goes to a a school with a $3k a yr. = $12k.
So we can make decisions. In life, work smart not just working hard. Make smart decisions.

I think its very easy for people who have never worked hard to build themselves up in life to say that doing anything in life is simple, uncomplicated, and easy. I am working towards my 3rd college degree, do you know how much work effort and time i have spent nto building myself over the years?

Your nephews are just one of the few rare lucky ones to be able to attend a cheap quality school. It really doesn't mean vast majority of the kids in the US have the same opportunity. Things are very complicated. If every kid in the US had access to a college that cost 280 dollars a year, then why would there be TRILLIONS of dollars of student loan debt?

And of course in certain fields, prestige matters when it comes to finding a job. Going to an excellent school matters rather than going to some random cheap lala land unverisity.

Throughout my years, i find that its mainly the mainly the older adults who have never built themselves while they were young that have this very simplistic mindset of the real world. That finding a decent job is easy. That paying for college should be easy. That getting a degree isn't really that much hard work. That the college you go to doesn't matter to your job search

You dont understand how complicated things are because you have never been through it.

If you had worked hard in building yourself in your youth, you won't have to be clipping coupons or working 2 jobs to make ends meet

Vast majority of professionals who make over 100k a year hold masters degrees. Going to work 40 hours a week, class 12 hours a week and studying 20 hours a week. Its a very tiring process.

Right now i barely sleep more than 4 hours a night. And i have been doing this for a long time.

You just dont know how much work it takes for a person to make a good life in the US. Its not easy

I stay home with my kiddos and don't work. Would like to but just not in the cards with me being a military spouse I wouldn't be able to work anyways with no kids. My kids and husband depend on me being home to care for them. It's more important then any job I could ever have so it's worth the sacrifice for them.

I'm not a mom and I don't work from home. I think people often only see the upsides of working from home and none of the downsides. Yes not having to commute or deal with coworkers can be nice but working from home can be lonely with no where to go and no one to see.

I have a close friends who works from home for the federal government. She took a part time job on the weekends to make extra money and for the socialization aspect.

But I don't exactly agree they don't get "paid". They should have equal access to the money brought in by their spouses, and an equal say in how it should be spent / saved. That to me is the model for the ideal nuclear family.

Not at all. Tending to a man as much as tending to a child is tiresome. An adult male should not allow a woman to have to take that on. It’s not bitter at all.
