How/where do you meet new people/make new friends in your 30s?

This is a good question...

For me, my 30s were complex.
I finally left college at 29 but not officially.
When I was 29.5 and freshly broken-hearted, I moved from upstate New York to Los Angeles... It was time, you know? I knew no one in Los Angeles except my cousin in lived in Orange County an hour away and my other cousins who lived in Sacramento 6 hours to the north. I did have a college friend or two live in the area, but I didn't socialize with them. So, while in LA, I was mostly a loner although I had "friends" at work.

I had just turned 31 when I got laid-off, so I moved back to my college town. I still had some friends left, but I needed a job. So, at 32, I got a contractor job and, again, made friends at work but I did like them more. I was living with a roommate though and she was very social so I became friends with her friends who were often over at our place. MY friends though were leaving school, so that hurt.

She moved out when I was 33 and it was nice to have a decent job (albeit as a contractor) and have my own place. In some ways, this was the best time of my life. The girls who lived downstairs from me were friendly too - I knew one of them already because she was the baby sister of a friend from college years ago.

At 34, my buddies from college had started a business and wanted me to work for them, so I did. During this time, they were my friends along with my coworkers.

However, really, for the most part, I was a loner and actually preferred that because I was still broken-hearted for 5+ years... I didn't feel like dating and just needed to suffer privately. I had some real issues then wondering about the destiny of my life.

Still, I made some new friends in an odd way... I had to go to the laundromat and did so at a regular time each week. Well, I got to be friendly with the young guy who was the attendant there. His girlfriend lived across the street with her parents, so I met her too. We all started to get friendly so I became part of their circle even though I was a lot older than them. (Between 7 and 16 years older.) I was happy in a way, although I grew to hate my job with my buddies' company. However, that is where I met my wife when I was 36 almost 37. We left that company later.

My middle 30s are the period in my life that were the most pivotal. I wish I had done them differently. I wish I had been like I was - continued to be a loner with casual friends. It might have been depressing in a way, but I think in many ways, I would have been better off.

I forgot to mention something else... The Internet did not become public until I was 30. I did make online friends to a certain degree including having an LDR with a Canadian woman I visited just before I turned 33.

To be honest, at thirty two, I don't bother. I have some folks I've made into friends at work and we've hung out afterwards, but I'm not entirely sure on the etiquette of inviting them to hang out. Everyone has their own lives, with their own friends and families. I usually spend every day outside of work alone and am content with it now. I'm not even interested in dating any more.

They have my number, if they care to do anything with me, I've told them that they're welcome to call as I'm free, but I'm not going to bother them at all.

I find meeting people at church is easy if you visit churches where the people are close to your age and your good at giving advice.

I wouldn't call them friends but I attend these events usually organised by expat groups.

its kind of a tough age to do so especially if your only willing to meet people your own age. generally if i meet anyone new here there much younger often staff at places i go to like servers or gyms.

there is always options though and depends on your interests and comfort zone

i'm going to a pub crawl this weekend but everyone is going to be way younger than me but i don't really care and meet some of them before at bars here

yeah tough to meet new people that age as everyone seems to already be settled or too busy with careers to meet anyone outside of there work

This is an excellent question it's a lot tougher for women. When I moved to Vegas I moved w/ a female acquaintance, I Was able to easily make friends by playing pick up basketball or poker but she struggled mightily and pointed out that there's not really a competitive social setting for women to make friends w/ random women. She ended up leaving after a month.

I have big circle of friends...
