Alt-Person here (Grungie): It means that we belong to alternative Subcultures that are usually connected by music, fashion, politics and a certain ideology that is anti-consumerism and anti-mainstream, usually on the left spectrum. You can't be right-wing and be an alt-person, that is simply not possible bc you're not meeting the criteria in terms of politics.

Nowdays it's hard though to tell alt-people from alt-trenders, though. I'm not talking about baby-alts because they are new to their subcultures, I mean people emulating alt-subcultures on social media for attention because it makes them look cool. Alt-people's appearances and music interests promote certain ideas from our Alternative scenes that were shaped by external factors, not TV shows and the like.

Mainstream media has reduced alternative movements to their aesthetics and stripped them of their cores. It’s interesting how anti-consumerism subcultures are used to generate profit. It literally goes against what they stand for. Modern media uses subcultures to cater to a performative audience who doesn’t share the values. They only sell individuality with the promise of not having to put in the work.

When I think alt, I think punk, emo, rocker, goth, scene. Black clothing. Spikes. Tattoos. Chains. Rock. Metal. Grunge. Black nail polish. F*ck authority. Those vibes. 🎸
