I don't have kids, but I teach kids martial arts and have neighbours and friends with kids I sometimes spend time with.

In martial arts, I try to teach them how to hear feedback and criticism, turn it into constrictive lessons, and how to take a long-term view on gratification.

Other than that, they also learn a lot of smaller but important things.

My two favourite things students have told/shown me:

A student I've been teaching since they were 12 recently came out to me, because I am visibly butch and andro, and this gave them the confidence and safety to feel like they can be out in our club safely.
A student around 10 with very clearly redneck family once complained that Japanese was a "weird" language with the sort of disgust a young boy raised by racists wore. Obviously not well-received by the several of us in class who are Asian or the Japanese students. I challenged that and asked if it was really weird or if it was just unfamiliar. He agreed it's unfamiliar and you could just see how that one word choice shifted the building beliefs in his mind.

I don't really actively try to teach kids much (other than, like, karate stuff). I feel the best way to teach kids is to act in ways you think would be best for them to emulate, break down what you're doing and why so they can understand, and help them practice.

Display emotional regulation and compassion and the kids will pick up on that.

Act like a dick and that's what they'll learn.

Yes. They learn how to eat right now. They will learn how to read & write etc because you can't rely on schools to do it for you and they will learn how to be a good Catholic

not my children but yes... I've been raising a young one, and I am also a tutor and I've been a coach

and the most important things I want them to learn is to learn by themselves, yes... with guidance but still, to learn how to learn on themselves

also, to make it very clear that pretty much anyone in their lives will be an example to live by... an example of both, what to do and what NOT to do as well as why... you should be doing/or not doing and acting/not acting in certain ways

I have a daughter, and it has taught me:

1) To be a little more patient and to just listen without judging or being opinionated on the subject.

2) That even though something may not seem like a big deal to you, it can be to someone else.

3) Every woman is some parent (s) little girl so you treat her with respect, the same way I hope someone will treat mine.

I graduated college late in life. My kids watched me go to school at night, study for exams on the weekends all the time i worked full time, coached soccer, did chores around the house and went to a lot of their activities. They saw how hard it was for me and maybe that is why they all graduated from college in 4 years right after high school.

I don't have children but I have a younger brother and sister that I kinda mother. Sometimes they will come to me before going to mom and dad because they both say I'm easy to talk with. I try to be a good role model for both them.
