Has someone you didn't know personally but who was a friend of a friend ever shown you hatred?

How would you respond in this circumstance? It's incredibly unpleasant, and I would appreciate some guidance on how to deal with it.

yes! when i was ten, a friend of a friend echoed his catholic belief that i killed jesus. [i was still jewish then] he spoke very angry and wanted to hit me but only held back because i was a friend to his friend. when i said "i was born long after jesus died" i learnt talking does not help when people are angry. the only option is to run.

Refuse to say anything bad to or about them. Give them enough rope to hang themselves, so to speak.
