How do you feel about people that always have to be better than you? They always have to “one up” you?

Question

I was telling, what I thought was a friend, how excited I am about becoming a EXPER Level 6, instead of being happy for me, this is basically what she said, “You’re such a loser! Big deal, I’m a level 7 and nothing changed for me. You should just grow up”! Wow, just WOW! She couldn’t be happy for me, just had to make herself feel superior. Do any of you know people like this?

I had a childhood friend for 50 years. She married a guy with a rich family and has never had to work.

She was just using me to show off her life to me. It took me until I was in my 60's when I finally figured her out. Duh!
She was always trying to make me envious of her. Sending me pictures of all of her vacations around the world when she knew I was sick and bed bound and couldn't go anywhere. "Oh, look at us having fun. Too bad you can't".
Finally I got upset with her because I really needed to talk to her, and she was too busy at the beach in a $3,00/week home on the beach. See, she always had to let me know the price of everything too.
When I didn't get a text from her, I reminded her of what a good friend I've been to her all these years. She texted back telling me how she was offended by my text.
I never texted or contacted her again.

And actually I felt better by ending the one-sided relationship. I even tore up all of her pictures and that was cathartic. Felt good to do that!

A guy I went on a date with. I actually told the story on one of Lisia’s questions. If I told him about something I did, he did it five times and better. He would ask me a question and basically tried to answer it for me. I was so glad when the night was over!

I have a cousin like that, drives me fucking nuts! He’s a doctor and basically walks around telling everyone that. I have another friend, that happens to be on this site, that is like that.

Oh yes some of my family I don’t talk to at all. All of them have always one upped me. So I don’t deal with it anymore. They want to stick their noses in the air so high an airplane could fly into the nostrils? Best way to deal with it, ignore them.

Yes of course, there are many people who have that kind of attitude. Such people do not act on logic rather they always want their big egos to be satisfied and to do that they always try to show they are superior to others.
