I seem to have asked the wrong question as it has gained responses mostly from people that no longer have their mother around. Seeing that I have lost my father and whenever Father's day rolls round its always bittersweet I am very sorry for all of you and your loss. I know how it feels. I apologise for unwantedly triggering sadness.

At present, I am away from my mother. I wanted to celebrate this mother's day with her but my parents are living in another city. I wanted to take her to a big fancy restaurant and buy a gold jewellery 🎁 for her. But I have to postponed it. She has severe health issues. She is unable to eat spicy food. She is unable to walk bcoz of Osteoarthritis chronic disease of joints. Few months back, she underwent a eye cataract removal surgery. Oh god ! Why did my mom grew older? I want my young and energetic mom back.

My own Mom is already at a better place. Were she still with us, I'd gift her my time, attention and support. Not only on one specific day :)

Actually, weird thing, but neither Mother's Day nor Father's Day has ever been really big in my family. Not sure why.

Suffice to add that as I was growing up I can remember my mother would say, "If you can't be nice to me all year round, don't bother to be nice to me on Mother's Day. It's just a Hallmark Holiday." So as that was all I heard, I just assumed it was true - a holiday like Columbus Day or something like that. Recognized, but not anything you really did anything for, and growing up, I didn't recall really doing anything for either Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Anyhow, I grew up in Michigan but moved for my career in 1988 to Washington, DC. One day I was listening to the radio and heard the stat that Americans spend several billion on Mother's Day every year. To me that was a stunner.

It was like, "What? We spend billions on a Hallmark holiday?" It was only then that I realized that my mother's faux modesty was not the norm and that most families made a big deal about Mother's Day in particular. However, for me, it is still "send mom a card, mission accomplished."

Even now, as a parent, myself, I don't expect much for Father's Day, but I will take my girlfriend - the mother of my three children out for bunch, and will get her a card and flowers. However, I have to say - and I love my girlfriend and the three little gifts she has given me with all my heart - it is still not a big day, and in that connection I always tell my girlfriend not to me make a big deal about Father's Day.

Bottom line, having grown up in a family where Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter Sunday were huge - and I mean HUGE - holidays, Mother's Day and Father's Day hold a weird spot in my head and my heart. I go through the motions - and I love my parents and try to appreciate them in myriad ways - but the days themselves are no big deal in my head.

@handsomelad70 Believe me, I don't disagree. However, from my perspective, it was a shock to learn that Mother's Day - especially - and Father's Day were such a big deal. I literally - LITERALLY- believed my mom and so just sent a card and that was pretty much it.

To later learn that Americans spend about $12 billion each year on Mother's Day alone - less for Father's Day to be sure - was something of a revelation. So it goes.

@handsomelad70 Yes, and I am about mine. However, I make a big deal about their birthdays and Christmas and Easter presents. (Yes, we do presents for Easter Sunday.)

That said, having it drilled into your head that Mother's Day and Father's Day were just commercial inventions you tend to disregard it. Again, neither my mother nor father ever seemed - dad is dead now - offended and so I just took it as no big deal holidays.

Picture yourself in an alternate reality. That is what it felt like to me when I found out that they were treated as big holidays by others,

I don't know what we plan to do in person I'll probably end up working and wouldn't be able to go out to eat so I ordered my mom a glass angel with a flower inside it on Amazon and had it shipped directly to her house with a note that says Happy Mother's Day.

I'll celebrate by taking my daughters to work with me so their idiot mother can waste her life like normal by talking to her legitimately retarded best friend on the phone for 8 hours and accomplishing nothing like normal

I have some of her favorite flowers that I plant on her grave.
They like shade which is good, this is a very old cemetery, and many of our past family members are buried there, so they have nice big trees.
Her grave site is always shaded.
