What do you think you miss most as you get older?

I guess I remember my carefree childhood when I enjoyed everything.

My potential. It's the inverse of being young. When you're young you can't wait to be older and be successful. But as you age that potential is fulfilled (hopefully) with your measure of success. But you now have less potential to do better.

I'll give you an example. When I was 25 I was flat broke. I had aspirations of being a millionaire. I didn't know how I was going to get there exactly but I had a lot of years. (Before retirement) to figure it out and accomplish it. At that time even a 100k was unfathomable to me. Now, 20+ years. later I'm in the high six figures. It's basically a forgone mathmatical conclusion that I will be a millionaire (at least 1 million) by the time I retire. But now I've exhausted a lot of that potential I'm already 2/3 of the way to retirement age. When I was 25 my goal was at least a million. But I still had enough potential to achieve many millions. With the decreased time to do so I'd be hard pressed to achieve much more than a million in that time. Half the fun of life is the journey. I've thoroughly enjoyed setting goals and moving heaven and earth to smash them. But as you get older, life starts taking things away from you. Whether you want it to happen or not. Profit motive lessens as time becomes your new driving force. If you've been successful, you have the funds to do many things. But you're well aware that time is finite. You realize that in the end what really matters was the journey and the lives you've touched and the legacy you leave behind.

So I'll miss the potential that is now gone.
