If your child were to repetitively do the same thing and virtually ruin their life what would you do?

If she's 17, I'll let her. At that point, we're here to support and guide you, not to control you. You can't control a 17 year old unless you use physical force, which is a serious crime. So our job is what I said before, plus doing everything we can to not contribute to the damage. Just know that some parents won't continuously clean up your wreckage. Especially when it's willfully being created. Enablers will, but I don't know if your parents are enablers.

My kids are much younger, so it's still my job to stop them from ruining their lives. I take away the things that harm them, and teach them about consequence. Exactly. They can't control you. And it's not their job to anymore. You're well past the age of understanding consequences of your actions. You've had 17 years to learn. No excuses. You want a fucked up life, keep doing fucked up stuff. You want a good life, make better decisions. Up to you.

Just remember that eventually you'll run out of people to clean up your mess. Maybe it won't be until you're old and unattractive, but it will absolutely happen. And you'll get to look back on life and remember that you made a decision to do this. And it wasn't that you were young and stupid. That's a cop out. At this exact moment, you're old enough to know better. So don't try to be a victim later down the road. This is on you. Genuinely wishing the best for you 🤞

If they are under 18 I would do what I could to make them understand what they are doing. But ultimately they are still the one that needs to decide if they truly want to change their behavior. Parents can only do so much the child needs to take responsibility for their own life as well.

I would have to assess the underlying causes of the behaviour and find appropriate interventions. This could involve therapy, medication, or a combination of both.
