i've been for the most part sticking to the traditional styles and colours with a emphasis on "what is easy to clean, and what can't my nearly 3 year old take off so he doesn't smear shit on the home".
However once they come into more interaction when choosing their clothes, i don't really care if they ask and prefer more "girly" styles.
