Not really. In part. I think its a matter of phases of life.

Roll time back 70 years. You're fresh out of highschool. You walk into a bank. They hire you. You didn't walk there for that but hey, you did some math in school. Five years later you have bought a house. Fully paid for it too. You've got a car, house. You're barely 23.

You're set and ready.

Fastforward to today. You get a bachelors to be competitive, you had to shift once or work a couple years to afford it. You're 23. You own a car, student loans and buying a place to live is a far off fantasy.

You work. Buying a house upfront is going to take you well into your 40s, maybe more. So that isn't happening. But government and banks have made more and more money available to loan and are asking for a lower and lower percentage. That doesn't help you. When the percentage for a downpayment went from 15% to 7.5% the price of the house just doubled. On top of it all you were always taught to be responsible, to budget and manage things well and honestly, kids might not be realistically economically viable.

It differs of course but that sums up my view. We should all be working less, I agree. But even before that everyone should be getting a bigger part of the pie.

40 hour workweeks have been around for a very long time and people have been having kids when they were working six days a week and 12 hours a day on farms.

It's about what you're willing to commit time to. I think it's mostly about what kinds of families people came from, how well they're doing financially and if they want children.

They are a big commitment when they're young. Eat up loads of your time. But, in the long run, they can bring good things to your lives. There will always be rough spots, as in any relationship. But I'm glad I had a kid. Much better than a dog or cat. And they grow up and pick up their own shit.

No. There are a lot of reasons why people aren't starting families, the least of which is not that men and women these days truly seem to deeply hate and resent each other (and yes, feminism is largely to blame, though not exclusively). Likewise, they spend so much time on their phones and on social media that they don't interact with people. They can't afford it, they've had bad examples from their parents and now grandparents too.

The 40-hour-work week is only a small factor.

It's funny that you keep projecting your insecurities, because I'm pointing to the actual problems in human behavior and biological basis for population crashes. There is no major natural disaster, no major war or conflict, no mass migration, or environmental change that would crash population and cause genetic bottle necking. There's technically no resource depletion to exceed carrying capacity, but there is a resource management issue (due to debasement of the world reserve of currency) which is driving economic instability. There is however a large issue of dysfunction in behavior, a rise in mental health problems, and a change in reproductive behavior. It's easy to see if you just open up your eyes and look around some time. You can for example sit in a restaurant and watch a couple on a date sitting at a table across from each other both staring at their phones rather than communicating with one another. Too many people are mentally broken. You sound like one of them.
