Fortunately for me, it never happened. We are a pretty close family even though I had some issues with my older brother as a child. Now, we have settled those issues and there are no problems among us.
As for friends, I am very selective whom I befriend and never had any issues with any of them because they know where my limits are and make sure never to cross that set boundary.
However, I am aware of some friends that have had to go through that kind of ordeal to be left out by family and it does take a toll on them. They became more introverted and did not want to be part of a group of friends because they feared the questions that were going to be asked. They slowly moved away from friendships and started isolating themselves.
It's just a way of life.
