Girlfriend joining the army.

Recently my girlfriend has wanted to join the army. Now sure I should be one happy guy to see their girl go off and protect our country, but she's only 19 and still has her whole life ahead of her.

Before I ask the question I guess I should put a little background into this. She's very smart and could get into any college she wants and have any scholarship. She's got many friends and many family members that love her. She's very sweet and isn't really someone that would just go out and enjoy boot camp.

I guess what I am trying to say is how can I talk her out of it. I'm not trying to be selfish, it's just I have this feeling that while I'm back here in Cali worrying about her that she's going to be missing home and everything that she gave up. I mean 8 years is a VERY long time.

She doesn't have to sign up for 8yrs. There are much shorter terms of enlistment. Second I was 17 when I joined the army. I dropped out of high school to do it. I would have graduated and had a full scholarship to ASU. You don't become a soldier because you have no friends family or a future. If being a soldier is something she truly wants then you shouldnt try and talk her out of it. If you love her then you should realize it's her decision and support her. Having said that you do need to tell her exactly how you feel. Don't hold anything back.

Well the Army was my dream and it was a great decision for me... Girls, they can't go into a Combat Oriented job like the Infantry, Artillery, Calvary, Special Forces. And to be honest the girls in the army that I have encountered are the weird ones from high school, the ones that were picked on, and outcasts, so I don't see why a girl like your girlfriend would join the Military.

Just talk to her and find her side of the story, find out what is driving her to join the army. If you really cherish her you will let her make her own decesions, even if that mean letting her go.

Tell her to just go into the Reserves! So she can stay home!

Tried that, but she says they don't do anything in the reserves.

Well you don't, but at least you can say you are "in the army" or whatever. I would just tell her how you feel and tell her you are just worried about her and her safety.

She knows I am but she claims that she wants to see the world in which I would gladly take her anywhere she wanted. I know some of my older family members went into the army and two of them went mentally insane just in boot camp. They are ok now, well except for one that past away (Natural Causes) but this girl just isn't the type that could just go out and pull a trigger. She will pretty much say yes to everyone and everything so it worries me that maybe the recruiter just brainwashed her.

All I can say is talk to her and address your concerns. That is the only think left to do. If you love her and she loves you she will listen and take into consideration what you have to say. I understand completely where you are coming from. Good luck!
