This brief take is created as a response to the insecurity expressed by many young women on here, as well as the debate on how much makeup a woman should wear.
There is no doubt that women have always looked to Hollywood as a standard of beauty, but with the rise of social media and Instagram models, women are constantly bombarded with images of seemingly "perfect" women. This can often cloud our perception of our own beauty, and we rarely stop to consider that these "perfect" images are nothing but smoke and mirrors; an illusion created by air-brushing, photoshopping, filters, and of course, makeup.
Don't believe me? Here are 10 celebrities that are totally unrecognizable without makeup, airbrushing and filters:
1.Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks, former model and actress best known as the host of America's Next Top Model, rose to fame to be the first African-American woman to be featured on the cover of GQ Magazine. But this fresh face beauty is far from flawless. The model decided to share a no-makeup selfie of herself with her fans to show them the REAL Tyra.
2. Heidi Klum
Another famous supermodel, Heidi Klum, most recently known as a host of America's Got Talent, is also unrecognizable without makeup. The 44-year-old mother of 4 looks nowhere near her glamourous-model self without makeup, but rather an average tired mom with 4 kids.
3. Jennifer Lopez
Triple-threat sensation Jennifer Lopez (J.Lo.) is another celeb that looks completely different without makeup. The 47-year-old has also willingly shared multiple no-makeup videos and pictures of herself with her fans. Fortunately for her, J.Lo.'s skin-care routine has helped her maintain a nearly flawless face.
4. Pamela Anderson
Unlike J.Lo., time has not been so kind to Pamela Anderson. The 50-year-old former Playboy Playmate and actress is not the same Bay Watch bombshell that was the ultimate sex-symbol of the 90's. Without her makeup, Pamela looks haggard and tired, which can probably be attributed to her many years of hard-partying and drug use.
5. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga, is yet another actress to willingly go barefaced on social media. The 31-year-old singer and song writer is infamously known for her outlandish outfits and appearance. However, without all her wigs, costumes and makeup, Gaga looks, well, average.
6. Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian, the queen of selfies and superficiality, is probably the best example of how makeup and filters (...and lets not forget loads of plastic surgery and Botox) can alter a woman's appearance. As you can see, nothing about this woman is real or authentic.
7. Kylie Jenner
And while on the subject of Kim, we can't forget her little mini-me want-to-be sister, Kylie Jenner. The 20-year-old media mogul is a chip off of the old Kardashian block; almost everything about her is fake. If you take away her makeup, filters and multiple plastic surgeries, you are left with a pretty average (human) looking girl.
8. Nicki Minaj
Much like Lady Gaga, the flamboyant rapper Nicki Minaj is no stranger to colorful makeup, wigs and costumes. Again, like her famous counterparts, Nicki is just average looking under all of her alter egos. She looks like a completely different person, au naturale.
9. Amanda Seyfried
There is no doubt that Amanda Seyfried has always had a "unique" look, which has made her stand out in a sea of other Hollywood actresses. But the 32-year-old A-list actress, best known for movies like Mean Girls and Dear John, doesn't look nearly as stunning without makeup.
10. Beyoncé
Finally we have Beyoncé, Queen B, is the epitome of feminine power and beauty. There is no doubt that Bey is beautiful without her makeup, but she certainly is not perfect; yet another example of how makeup creates the illusion of perfection.
So next time you start to feel "ugly" or "average" when panning through the selfies of so-called beautiful women, remind yourself that all is not what it seems; its most likely an illusion.
