I don't think it's too common. Humans in general are too self-centered to think as broadly about how their friend group might influence their image. They're too focused on how their friend group makes them feel.

Umm.. not fat exactly. But attractive women have average looking women as their close friends. I don't know whether they do it on purpose but this happens. But that's based on my observation. So the reality can be different also.
