It depends, as a fashion choice, I'm not a fan of them but it can be useful in hygienic circumstances or industry where long hair is a bad idea. I can see the benefits as people with long hair tie it up for a variety of reasons.

If I need mine out of the way, it only makes a small ponytail.

I don't like the man bun per se, but it has nothing to do with how attractive or not a guy is. A handsome guy will still be handsome with a man bun, an ugly guy won't become hot if he gets a man bun.

I put my hair in bun not for looks, but for my health and safety.

So it don't get caught in machinery. So for me its for safety. I want long hair but I don't want to die over it
