Today I said I wouldn't bring my "closed-toed" shoes to vacation, and my mother and stepfather corrected me, saying that's a term girls use to refer to their shoes. That guys should only say running shoes.

I got no idea, i never heard this term.

But overall, it just describes the looks of the shoes, so i don't think its exclusive to females.

But It only makes sense to use it when you got closed and opened toed shoes... and i would describe all opened-toes-shoes as sandals or flipflops.
